All rights reserved =========================================================================== Tuesday December 31, 2002 Permian Basin Obituaries Wilbur Charles "Abe" Collins MONAHANS - Wilbur Charles "Abe" Collins, 73, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at his residence in Monahans. Mr. Collins was born March 8, 1929 in Wichita Falls to Harry H. and Agnes Collins. He married Martha Bell Kinman Oct. 7, 1946 in Marfa. He was a 61-year resident of Monahans and a retired District Superintendent for Bass Enterprise. He was a member of the 3rd and Dwight Church of Christ in Monahans. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the 3rd and Dwight Church of Christ in Monahans. Burial will follow at the Monahans Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home. Greg Holly will officiate. Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his loving wife Martha on Feb. 27, 1993; his parents, Agnes Boals Collins Aug. 16, 1993 and Harry H. Collins May 30, 1996; one sister, Edna Lea Dec. 29, 1926; one brother, Harry H. Collins Jan. 14, 2001; one son-in-law, Kevin Perry Oct. 7, 1981; and one great-granddaughter, Lacy Lea Collins Sept. 8, 1993. He is survived by one daughter, Teresa Perry of Monahans; five sons and daughter-in-laws, Charles and Mary Collins of Monahans, Dennis and Sue Collins of Monahans, Frank and Jackie Collins of Midland, Eddie and Norma Collins of Jal, N.M. and Michael and Carla Collins of Athens. He is survived by 15 grandchildren, Brandon and Traci Collins of Colorado City, Ross and Rickette Collins of Nashville, Ark., Leahdesa Hilburn of Monahans, Abe and Alexis Collins of Huntsville, Tara and Mike Salisbury of San Angelo, Christan Collins of Dallas, Clay and Essie Collins of Midland, Michelle Spaulding of Midland, Michael and Holly Collins of Fort Worth, Angela Pavao of St. Petersburg, Fla., James and Katrina Collins of Roswell, N.M., Amanda and Jason Sansom of Lubbock, Jody and Rachel Perry of Lubbock, Logan Collins of Athens and Mikayla Collins of Athens. He is survived by 15 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Blake and Kamryn Collins of Colorado City, Blaire and Ashleigh Collins of Nashville, Ark., Dailey Hilburn of Monahans, Matthew Salisbury of San Angelo, Kacey and Whitney Collins of Midland, Kaleigh and Kutter Spaulding of Midland, Cameron Collins of Fort Worth, Kody and Conner Collins of Roswell, and Brianna Sansom of Lubbock. Also four great-grandchildren expected in 2003. He is survived by three sisters and brother-in-laws, Grace and Danny Greenwood of Monahans, Frances and Ray Mincey of Brownfield and Josephine and Melvin Reynolds of Gilmer; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Gail Collins of Kermit; and one sister-in-law, Cathy Collins of Fort Stockton. Floyd Lee Garrett EARLY - Services for Floyd Lee Garrett, 57, of Lake Brownwood are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Hetzel officiating. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Kilgore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kilgore with Cliff Brunson officiating. Mr. Garrett died Friday, Dec. 28, 2002, in the comfort of his home after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born June 2, 1945, in Camden, Ark. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy "Dot" Walker; and a sister, Meibrey Tollison. Mr. Garrett retired as Deputy Chief of the Odessa Police Department and was also an independent business owner. He had been resident of Lake Brownwood since 1991, formerly of Odessa. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving his country through the United States Navy. He received his bachelors degree from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He was a Baptist. Survivors include two daughters and son-in-laws, Lee Ann and Bob Hein of Kilgore and Dee Dee and Mike Sherrod, all of Kilgore; two brothers, Theron Alley and Bill Walker, both of Odessa; his father, Edward C. Walker of Odessa; four grandchildren, Jacki, Jami and Jeri Hein and Justin Sherrod, all of Kilgore; a companion of five years, Sheila Hamlin and her sons, Steven and Derek Hamlin, all of Kilgore; and several nieces and nephews. Services are entrusted to Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Norman W. Whitefield ABILENE - Services for Norman W. Whitefield, 81, of Abilene are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory St., with Dr. Bill Green and Dr. John Stevens officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home of Abilene. Mr. Whitefield died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at an Abilene medical center. He was born Feb. 18, 1921 to Emmitt Polk and Mable Howland Whitefield in Sinton. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II; the Mediterranean Theater of War in Italy with the 12th Air Force; the 85th Squadron of the 47th Bomb Group; and as a pilot flying 60 bombing missions in the A20 bomber. Mr. Whitefield married Joyce Marie Fulbright on Dec. 7, 1943, in McLean. He completed his education with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) in 1947. He attended New York-Phoenix School of Design in New York. He received a Master of Art History degree from the University of Denver and attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio for post-graduate studies. He worked at Abilene Christian University from 1948 until his retirement in 1990. He was Associate Professor of Art, who specialized in art history. He was also the Head of the Art Department for about 20 years prior to retirement; and the Director of the Shore Art Gallery on the ACU campus. He was a member of the University Church of Christ. Mr. Whitefield was past president of the Creative Art Club of Abilene and member of Abilene Fine Arts Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin Whitefield and Doyle Whitefield; and one sister, Ouida Whitefield. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Whitefield of Abilene; a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law, James and Frances Fulbright of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.
