Paula was born April 15, 1935, in Canyon, Tx, to Joe and Pauline McCarty. Paula was in the process of moving to Taylor, Tx, after living in Cloudcroft, N.M., 24 years. She was a member of Mountain of The Lord Faith Fellowship Church in Cloudcroft, N.M. She retired as an EMT in March 2002 after serving as EMS Head coordinator for James Canyon Vol. Fire Dept. She was also a former reporter for Mountain Monthy News in Cloudcroft. She was preceeded in death by her parents; two brothers, John and Tony Orsini, a sister, Deve Ann Orsini. He was born April 16, 1935, in Big Wells, Texas, to Manuel and Maria Gonzales. He married Felma Salazar January 19, 1960, in Pecos. Mr Gonzales is survived by his wife, Felma of Odessa; sons, Amado Gonzales and Pedro Gonzales, both of Odessa; daughter, Leticia Gonzales and her husband, Kirby Newbanks, of Odessa; brothers, Augustine Gonzales and Amado Gonzales, both of Odessa; sisters, Cayetana Sauceda of Odessa, San Juana Ruiz of Odessa, Cecilia Robledo of Portland, Tx, Ignacia Guerra of Sinton, Tx, and Manuela Lira of Austin; granddaughters, Rita Gonzales and husband, Joey Nava, and Natalie Tavarez; grandsons, David Gonzales and Alex Gonzales. Landford Jr. of Odessa passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the age of 79, at the Hospice House in Odessa. He was born May 6, 1923, in Blacklick, Ohio, to Ralph E. Landford Sr. and Bertha Lorrine Foor. Mr. Landford Jr. was a postal carrier for over 30 yrs. He also enjoyed working on golf carts. Ralph served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Dorothy L. Wood Aug. 4, 1946. Memorial services are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. The VFW will perform full military honors. He married Lucila Villarreal April 20, 1947. Ramon was retired from the First Security Insurance Company, First Heritage Insurance Company and Pyramid Life Insurance Company and was the former owner and operator of the Police Emergency Code Company in Pulaski County. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dortha Hollingworth. He is survived by his wife of 51 and a half years, Virginia Lee Nelson Hollingworth; his daughter, Raellyn F. Hollingworth Cockerham of Bryant; his son, Hal O. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Mr. Webb was born April 20, 1919, in Montage County, Texas. He was a member of the Sherwood Church of Christ in Odessa. Mr. Webb was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Marine Corps. He loved his country and family more than anything. Mr. Webb moved to Odessa in 1951 where he worked for several oil companies before retiring from El Paso Products in 1980. Mr. Webb was also a 32nd Degree Mason who enjoyed giving far more than receiving. He always looked forward to the day he could be with mom and God. He is preceded in death by his wife, Juanita, in July of 1992. He is survived by his son, Mike Webb and his wife, Debra; daughter, Darlene Bronaugh and her husband, Ken, and daughter, Tammy Spolton and her husband, Mark. Zuehlke, born in Ballinger Nov. 8, 1933, to Oswald and Irene Scales Zuehlke, has gone to Heaven after a long struggle with emphysema on Saturday evening, Feb. 1, 2003. Lewis graduated from Ballinger High School, Angelo State and Texas Tech University. He worked for Ballinger Truck and Tractor and was a manager for LTV Energy Products in Odessa for 21 years and instructed the TABC laws for several years before retiring. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Lewis married Geraldine Pearse April 5, 1969, in Ballinger. Jake married Patricia Smith Nov. 17, 1968, and served his country in the Korean War, retiring from the Navy and the Naval Reserves. He was an oilfield welder, an electrician, worked in heating and air conditioning and was an engineering supervisor until he retired in 1991. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodcarving and was a member of Open Door Assembly of God Church. In the past, he was a Royal Ranger leader with the church. [020603lee.jpg] Skyler Lee Wilburn ODESSA Skyler Lee Wilburn, a junior student at Permian High School, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Medical Center Hospital. Skyler was born Jan. 26, 1986 in Odessa. He accepted Christ at an early age at the Bethlehem Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. Roscoe Sutton. Later, he became an active youth at the King Solomon Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. G.T. Garnett. He attended Blanton and Burnet Elementary, Bonham and Nimitz Junior High. Skyler was a member of the Permian High School junior varsity basketball team. Some of his friends, at the King Solomon Baptist Church, have reported that his smiling face that they saw every Sunday has been so vividly etched in their memory. Many schoolmates of Skyler have memories of how his smile brightened their most cloudy days. He was a very special person. Students at Permian High School have said, One thing that everyone at PHS will never forget about Skyler is his smile. He had a smile on his face that could have melted steel. He was born May 30, 1922, in Okmulgee, Okla., to pioneering parents, Martha Agnes and William Ray Butler. The western Oklahoma oil boom soon took Bill and his family to Braman, Okla., during the depression, and he attended school there and made many life long friends. From 1941 to 1945, Bill served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corp in the China-Burma-India Theatre. In November of 1945, at wars end, he married Jeannette Rasbach of Flint, Mich. In 1951, Bill moved his wife and two daughters, Martha and JoAnn to Odessa where he worked as a plant operator for Shell Oil Company. A third daughter, Mary Ellen, was born later. Bill and Jeannette reared their three girls in Odessa and Bill continued to work at Notrees until a transfer took them to Kalkaska, Mich. He and his wife retired to Okmulgee, Okla. The last five years of his life were spent in Odessa near his family. Bill was a patient and talented man who enjoyed his family and friends. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Jeanette; siblings, Eugene Butler of Illinois, Glenn Butler of Florida and Nellie Smith of Florida; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Dough Moore of Odessa, JoAnn and John Petzold of Houston and Mary Ellen and Kenneth Calley of Odessa; grandchildren, Shaun Moore and his wife, Angel, of Midland, Kimberly Moore of Seattle, Wash., Clinton Calley of Odessa, Mark Calley of Los Angeles, Calif., Jason Petzold of Houston and Denise and Kate Moore of Odessa; and great-granddaughters, Brittney Rice and Brice Moore of Midland. Otis was born Aug. 28, 1919, in Independence, Kan. He graduated from the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Okla., in Petroleum Engineering where he was listed in Whos Who in American Colleges and Universities and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He married Charlotte Neely on March 26, 1942. He was a professional engineer and member of AIMME. He served as Lieutenant (J.G.) in the United States Navy during World War II, commanding the minesweeper Prestige in the Pacific Theater. He and his family moved to Odessa in August of 1951. Professionally, Otis provided construction services for the natural gas production and processing industry. He worked with Bowden Construction Company, retiring as owner in 1997. Those who knew Otis recognized that he lived a wonderfully adventurous life. He was a proficient general aviation pilot, and an accomplished ocean yachtsman and celestial navigator. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Hunter; daughters, Frances Wilson and husband, Bob, of Summit Park, Utah, and Margaret Nyborg and husband, Phil, of Concord, Mass.; sons, James S. She was born Nov. 4, 1912, to Mary Etta McClellan and Roy B. Bozarth. She attended school in Lenora, Kan., and graduated from Kansas State University, working her way through school as a piano accompanist, graduating cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She also received a scholarship to the Julliard School of Music. She began her career as a teacher in Kansas, and In 1936 married Byron L. Davis and moved to Denver, Colo. During World War II, Alice worked as a supervisor at the Remington Arms Ammunition Plant in Colorado. She taught music and English, for the next 25 years in the Denver Public Schools. She married Hy H. Rothganger in 1966 and moved to Canon City, Colo., where she lived until her husbands health declined. Alice lived her final years in Odessa, Texas, where she could be near some of her family. She was a born-again Christian and enjoyed gardening and music. She loved her dogs and named them all Laddie. She is survived by daughters, Jeannine Englehart and her husband Wayne of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Jackie Stumpff of Midland, Texas. In addition, she is survived by her stepdaughters, Sally (Gary) Grimlund and Elisa (Terry) Lais; her grandchildren, Yvonne (Daniel) Lewis, Gena (Rowland) Ramos, Shauna Stumpff and her fiancé, Ross Bowman and Michael Englehart. [020903Stagg.jpg] Thomas Richard Dick Stagg ODESSA Thomas Richard Dick Stagg passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in Odessa, Texas. He was born July 29, 1924, in Clinton, Iowa, to Foster and Irma Stagg. He was raised in Thomson, Ill., where his parents owned and operated four weekly newspapers. Review Publications Inc. in Thomson, Ill. included the Thomson Review, the Chadwick Review, the Lanark Gazette and the Shannon Reporter. Dick started his newspaper career at the age of 12 after school by cleaning up, putting things away and melting the lead. When his father died suddenly in October 1941, and his older brother and most of the help were drafted into the service, Dick and his mother ran the newspapers throughout World War II. Dick did the production work including running the Linotype, double revolution press, folder and advertising sales and his mother did the news. After the war, Dick attended Western Illinois University for two years and the University of Missouri School of Journalism for one year, where he was the editor of the college newspaper. Then, being drafted into the U.S. Army for two years, he served in the Medical Corp., before returning to Thomson, Ill., where he and his brother ran the newspapers until they sold them in June 1967. In August 1967, Dick purchased the Crane News in Crane, Texas. He operated it for 25 years, selling it in August 1992 and retired to Odessa, Texas, where he had a 35-space mobile home park, which he started in June 1979. Dick is survived by his wife, Lucy Ann Stagg of Odessa, Texas; son, Mark Stagg and wife Jennifer and their children, Kristine Faulkenberg, Josephine, Jacqueline, Jeanette and Juliene Stagg, of New Braunfels, Texas; stepdaughter, Cheryl Hughes; stepsons, Scott Saxton and Chris Saxton; six step-grandchildren; sister, Elynor King of Clinton, Iowa. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. [021103scott.jpg] Wallace Scott ODESSA Wallace Wally Aiken Scott entered this world July 4, 1924, born to Claude W. and Maggie E. Scott in Van Horn, Texas. During his youth, he lived in Best and Iraan, Texas, before moving to Odessa with his family in 1936. His family was in the movie business, owning and operating the Scott Theatres. Wally began flying at the age of 18. At 19, he became a civilian instructor for the Army Air Forces Training Detachment in Fort Stockton, Texas. He was shipped out for overseas duty in October of 1944. Wallys first duty was flying a C-47 out of at Bourget Airdrome in Paris, France. He was transferred to Calcutta, India, where he flew both the C-47 and the C-46 for the Army Air Transport Command. While he was in the ATC, he flew missions over the Hump and many critical missions in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. He headed back for Odessa in 1945. Soon, he would meet his wife, Boots, who remained by his side until his death. During this time, Wally and Boots participated in archery competition. For 25 years, Wally held the distance flight record of 641 yards 1 foot 1 inch, accomplished with a 75 lb. Flight bow. In 1961, Wally took his first sailplane ride. To this day, he has logged more than 7000 hours and over 300,000 miles of cross country flying. He is in the Helms Soaring Hall of Fame. His sailplane was on display for three years at the Smithsonian Institute Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. He has won the Barringer trophy for the longest flight 29 times in the last 35 years. He has been on five Smirnoff Sailplane Coast to Coast Derbies, winning twice. He has also held all recognized world distance records. He was the 122 person in the world to earn this triple diamond pin and his 3000-kilometer pin. Wally flew from Odessa to Nebraska nonstop and was one of four Americans invited to soar the Andes from Chili to Peru. Another part of Wallaces life that brought him great joy was being considered one of Mojos greatest fans. He was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Wallace had many accomplishments during his life, whether it was in the military, soaring or in the realm of archery. However, his greatest accomplishments of the past 57 years were his children. His grandchildren were the pride of his life. His grandchildrens fondest memories of Grande were the times he put aside to spend with them. Wallace was preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers, Lawrence and Scotty; his sister, Winnie; his son-in-law, James R. Garner; and his granddaughter, Abby Anne Scott. He is survived by his wife, Boots of Odessa; his daughter, Seree and her husband, Gary Whitlow, of Hawkins, Texas; his son, Wallace A. II and his wife, Lucinda Scott of Sherman, Texas; his daughter, Dema and her husband, Joe Moore, of Waco, Texas; and his daughter, Deby Garner of Odessa. He was born July 28, 1917, in Fleetwood, Okla., to Hugh Hackberry Johnson and Revee Smith. On April 18, 1946, Raleigh married Anita Smith in Rankin. She preceded him in death. F. came to Odessa in 1996 from Lago Vista, Texas. During their early retirement years in Lago Vista, Jean was active in many community activities. After moving to Odessa, she participated in bridge clubs as well as other social events. Jeans happiest moments were spent enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born July 28, 1917, in Fleetwood, Okla., to Hugh Hackberry Johnson and Revee Smith. On April 18, 1946, Raleigh married Anita Smith in Rankin. She preceded him in death. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Army Air Corp and served proudly during World War II. He was also a 32nd degree mason and 63 year member of Big Lake Lodge #1203. Raleigh was Methodist. Mr. Miller was born in Amarillo, Texas, July 19, 1928, and lived most of his life in the west Texas area. He moved with his family to Seminole in 1946. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1947. He met his future wife, Mary Ruth Slaton, in high school and they were married in the First Presbyterian Church in Seminole May 18, 1949. Mr. Miller worked in the oilfields and retired from the Western Company in the early 1980s. He faithfully served as Elder and Deacon in his church for many years and raised his eight children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In 1991, he and his wife moved to Belton, Texas, to serve as missionaries with Hope For The Hungry, serving as long as his health would permit. She was born in Moran, Texas, Feb. 17, 1925, to Edna and Tropal Brooks. She received a degree in accounting from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. She married J.C. Johnson Jr. June 15, 1947, in Lamesa. She was not only a devoted and loving wife, a dedicated mother and best friend to her sons, but the worlds greatest MeMe to her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her father, mother and brother, Donald Brooks. Evans, 80, of Sheffield, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in the McCamey Convalescent Center. Mr. Evans was born March 30, 1922, in Dryden, Texas, to William T. Evans and Bertha Scott Evans. He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Alvin K. Evans; his sister, Willie Pool; and his younger brother, Gene Evans. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Wilson of Sheffield; and many nephews and nieces. Calvin will be greatly missed by his surviving family. Aside from his time in the U.S. Army, Calvin lived all of his adult life in Sheffield. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, inducted into the Army Nov. 15, 1942. He served with the 58th Coast Artillery Battalion from Fort Bliss and was discharged Feb. 12, 1946. Dean Mac McAtee ODESSA Mr. McAtee, 76, of Odessa, passed away at his residence on Wednesday evening, February 12, 2003. He was born in Ellsworth, Kansas, the fifth of eight children to Frank and Mary Proaps McAtee. His twin brother died at birth. At an early age, the family moved to Sacramento, California. While in high school, he earned All State status as a running back/linebacker in football and All State as a shot putter. He set a California high school shot put record that was not broken until 1983. He graduated from San Juan Union High School, Carmichael, California, in 1945. As it was during World War II, Mr. McAtee was unable to graduate with his class, but was an infantry man with the 7th infantry in the Phillipines preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He spent the remainder of his time in the Army in special services and he earned All Army in 1946 as a two way tackle fo the 7th Division football team. He earned an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army in 1947 with the rank of sergeant. He returned to Sacramento, California, where he attended Grant Tech Junior College, now the University of California at Sacramento, and played linebacker/tackle on their football team. He earned All Conference status both years he was at Grant Tech. In 1949, he returned to the Phillipine Islands and Guam working Civil Service. There he began what was a short career as a professional wrestler. He wrestled under the name Man Mountain Dean. In 1951, he returned to California and went to work for Kerr McGee Potash in Trona, California, and wrestled professionally on the Los Angeles-Las Vegas circuit. He was always proud that he once wrestled on a card that was headlined by Joe Louis, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World in Las Vegas. In a trip to Texas in 1952, he met a divorcee, Juanita Cozby Brown and her two children. Our mother fell in love with him and followed him to California. They were married June 12, 1952, in Las Vegas, Nev. It is a special man that will take over the duties of Daddy to two children. Dad and mom were married for 33 years. During mothers illness, he rarely left her bed. She passed away in 1985. He started his career in the oilfield in late 1952 in Odessa when the family came back to Texas. A son, Tony, was born in Andrews in 1954 and a son, Jimmy Dean, was born in Odessa in 1963. He worked as an operator/toolpusher for Williamson Well Service, Foote Well Service, Well Tech and Burk Well Service. He also ran tools for Basin Packer for a period of time. He retired as a salesman in 1993 from Oil Field Rentals. Mr. McAtee is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita; his son, Jimmy Dean; brothers, Cecil, Byron, O. T. and J. C. He is survived by sons, Billy M. Brown and Tony McAtee, and daughter, Regina Brown, all of Odessa; grandchildren, Robert Dean Brown and Christa Brown and great-granddaughter, Faith of Alluwee, Okla.; sister, Betty Dude Bramblett of Las Vegas, Nev., Dorothy Sinton of Reno, Nev., Jo Ann Elderkin of Gualala, Calif.; sister-in-laws, Louise McAtee of Sacramento, Calif., and Ruth McAtee of Sparks, Nev.; and a brother-in-law, Lee Roy Phillips of Wylie, Texas. Mr. McAtee will be cremated, and his ashes will be laid to rest by his wife. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the Oakleaf Cemetery in Mullin, Texas.
