Noble beloved mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 19, 2003, after a brief illness in Austin. Certain people in this world have a way of making each of us feel special and Rubilee Smith Noble was just such a person. This great story began on January 14, 1920. As the first of two sisters born to Oscar and Betty Smith, she grew up in the early days of the oil business. Rubilee spent the formative years of her life making friends up and down Highway 80. Wherever her father drilled a well, you will likely find people who called her their best friend. Attending schools throughout West Texas, she graduated from Coahoma High School in 1938. She met and then married Ray Noble in 1942. After making another set of lifelong friends while Ray served in the Army Air Corps, they started their family and settled down in Colorado City, which they and so many others would always call home. Living in Colorado City, she began what would be her lifelong interest in the theater and in education. When her husband Ray died in 1965, Rubilee went back to school, eventually obtaining her Masters Degree in Education. Relocating with her youngest child Betty to Odessa, she built a great life and career. Her hard work and love for special children pushed her forward through Ector County Independent School district to the position of supervisor of special programs where her devotion for her kids was legendary. For her work in education, she received the Heritage Foundation Award for Education in 1991. Her formal retirement in 1986 only began a new chapter in her love for education, first as a private tutor and then serving on the board of the Hillcrest School in Midland, she remained fully involved in education all of her life. Her passion for the theater followed her from Colorado City to Odessa, active both as an actor and board member for The Permian Playhouse. She threw herself into such productions as Gypsy, Death of a Salesman and Cheaper by the Dozen. She was also active in Mansion Dinner Theater, hosting many famous and infamous celebrities who visited Odessa during the Mansions run. She was committed to volunteerism, helping out at the Ellen Noel Art Museum, Odessa Regional Hospital and Meals on Wheels. A lifelong Presbyterian, she held most every office that a lay person can hold in the church. She was an elder, and Sunday school teacher, founder of the Working Womans Circle; she sang in the choir and served on any committee for which her help was requested. Perhaps her greatest role in life was her role as the glue that held her family together. And her greatest passion was always her family. Known as Mami to her nieces and nephews, Nana and Grandma to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was the devoted leader of the family. Always there to serve, entertain, house, clothe, feed or otherwise tend to any and all. Her three children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, together with her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews, all looked to her as head of the family arid will miss her greatly. She will be missed by her children, Shana Bassinger and husband, Hubert, Reggie Noble and wife, Roe, Betty Starnes and husband, Mac; grandchildren, Jana DeLoach, Raymond Bassinger, Reagon Noble, Natalee Noble, Derek Noble, Noble Starnes, Spencer Stames and Haylee Starnes; and great-grandchildren, Seth Sanchez. After graduating from Hardin-Simmons University, she began her teaching career in Blackwell, Texas, and Sterling City, Texas. Dr. Elvia Reynolds Jr., 79, a retired dentist, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Odessa Medical Center Hospital after a serious illness. He married Norma Gene Whitehead on Aug. 4, 1942, in Texarkana, Ark., and was anticipating celebrating his 61st anniversary with his wife and family in three weeks. He was born to Elvia Lester Reynolds Sr. and Connie Webb Reynolds on February 10, 1924, in Morrilton, Ark. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, at the 4th and Bois DArc Church of Christ, where he worshiped since 1954. He was buried near Jerusalem, Ark., at 10 a.m. July 23, 2003, at Cedar Creek Cemetery next to his mother and his father, and with many other relatives of many past generations. First and foremost throughout his life, Dr. Reynolds enjoyed most the times he had studying the Bible and Gods teachings and discussing these teachings with friends, relatives and aquaintances. This began in August 1935, at about 10 p.m., and after hearing brother J. D. Tant preach the Gospel for several days, he made the decision to become a citizen of the Lords Kingdom and was baptized on the bank of a creek near the Cedar Creek Cemetery. Shortly after his marriage, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the infantry in World War II in France and Germany. After his discharge, he attended Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas, and went on to attend Washington University Dental School in St. Louis, Mo. He passed the dental board in Montana, Arkansas, and Texas. He and Norma Gene headed west shortly after dental school and stopped in Pecos, Texas, in 1954. He practiced dentistry in Pecos for more than 49 years until his retirement March 1, 2003. In early 1960s, he studied orthodontics under Dr. Bill Reynolds of El Paso and limited his practice to orthodontics for the next 30 years. His patients traveled monthly to Pecos from all over the Permian Basin during his orthodontic years and his reputation was known far and wide. He was privileged to serve as an elder of the Church of Christ in Pecos for about 25 years, a past board member of Medina Childrens Home, a past member and President of the Pecos Barstow Toyah Independent School District for 12 years, a past member and Mayor Pro Tem of the Pecos City Council for nearly six years, a member and past President of the Pecos Rotary Club. At different times in his life, he raised horses and cattle. He was an avid BMW motorcycle rider, he rode motorcycles from the time he was a teenager until he was no longer able to ride, taking motorcycle trips all over the U.S. and Canada and Mexico and one such trip in 1980, he traveled 5000 miles in 10 days on his BMW motorcycle. But, more than the love of the ride, he enjoyed the company of his friends and family while on these trips, traveling in groups of as little as two to more than 12. He was an avid car enthusiast and in his later years, was easily recognized driving around Pecos in the 1965 red Chevrolet pickup, which was owned by his father before him. He enjoyed hunting and shooting and a variety of outdoor activities and taught his children many, many lessons through these and all of his activities, but somehow the importance of his activities always fell below his belief and faith in God and his love and devotion to God and his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Norma Gene Whitehead Reynolds of Pecos; two sisters, Dale Meyer and Dot King, both of Petit Jean Mountain, Ark.; a daughter, Gayle Britt and her husband, Ernest Britt, of San Carlos, Calif., and their children, Jessica Britt of Berkley, Calif., and Kirsten Britt Thomas and her husband, Micah Thomas, and their daughter, Abigail Thomas, all of Redwood City, Calif.; a son, Danny Lester Reynolds and his wife, Gwenda Reynolds, of Brownfield, Texas, and his two daughters, Gabriella Reynolds of Midland and Kelvia Reynolds Smith and her children, Cody Smith, Bryce Smith, Brock Smith and Avery Smith of Odessa, Texas; a son, Randall Webb Reynolds and his wife, Lisa Reynolds, of Pecos, Texas, and their children, Randall Webb Reynolds Jr. of Malibu, Calif., and Rebecca Reynolds, Amie Reynolds and Alyson Reynolds of Pecos; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. _________________________________________________________________ Top | Obituaries Index | Home Copyright © 1999-2003 Odessa American.
