Freida McFadden FORT STOCKTON Freida Holyce Hardy McFadden was born to Harrison DeCalbe Hardy and Ethel Moegelin Hardy in Abilene, Texas on March 11, 1926. Her family moved shortly afterwards to Pecos, Texas where she attended public schools and graduated from Pecos High School. She met Henry Wayne McFadden when he was visiting his parents, I.M. and Velma McFadden, in Pecos while on military leave from his wartime duties in the Army Air Corps. They were married in Fresno, California, on May 24, 1944, and returned to Pecos after the war to start their family by having sons, Wayne Jr. and Bruce, and raising an orphaned niece, Carroll. Wayne and Freida remained united in marriage until his death on Christmas morning 1995. Freida was a giver and volunteer. She was wholly immersed civically in Fort Stockton after moving there in 1956. She was a 50+ year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Ladies Oriental Shrine, lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, volunteer for the Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League, Director of Vocational Office Education, Bandaiders, Parent-Teachers Association, President of the Legal Secretaries Association, Womens division of the chamber of commerce, chairperson of the annual Miss Fort Stockton beauty contest and participant in the 1959 Fort Stockton Centennial and later, the Sesquicentennial. She raised funds for every worthwhile cause in the area including the American Cancer and Heart Associations. She was recognized as a recipient of the Award of Excellence and Legal Secretary of the year in 1965 and 1974. She was named as a Personality of the South on 3 separate occasions. Freida was an entrepreneur and a very well read person. She began her career by working as the assistant to the president of Security State Bank in Pecos. When she and Wayne moved to Fort Stockton, she went to work at Ellyson Abstract and Title Company. It was during this time that she pioneered and introduced the concept of title insurance to Pecos and Brewster Counties. There is very little land in Texas two largest counties, Pecos and Brewster, that she did not abstract or write title insurance commitments on during her 45-year career. Eventually, Freida acquired ownership of the company and one of her greatest pleasures was providing worthwhile careers in the abstracting business for many young women in the community. During the swings of business cycles in the oil and farming industries, she was able to keep many of these young women, wives and mothers employed and earning a paycheck, oftentimes without paying herself. Many of these women moved on to other careers in the school and city/county offices across Texas. While she owned it, Ellyson Abstract was a training ground for abstractors. It was said often by various people in the industry, if Freida trained you, you were employable anywhere because you knew the industry inside and out. Freida most importantly was a Christian. She was born into the Baptist Church and was a 45-year member of the First Christian Church where she served along with the likes of Maud S. Saenger and Mrs. H.H. Rollins and many other pioneer women of the area as a Deaconess and President of Women of the Church and Christian Womens Fellowship. She was a daughter, sister, wife and mother of extraordinary proportions who loved helping family, friends and strangers. She was the go to person whenever there was a hurt or a need. Often, during bad economic times, she bought cakes, pies and various sundries from women whose husbands had lost their incomes. A favorite saying of hers was you pay for your space on this earth by the service you render to others. She was of great service to many people. After years of suffering hardships due to her failing health, she was reunited on Saturday, July 19, 2003 with her son, Wayne, Jr. who was killed in an auto accident, and the love of her life Wayne, Sr., her parents and 7 siblings and friends, many of whom passed away very recently. Her son Bruce and daughter in law Becky, grandsons Blake, Brady and David and great granddaughter Cierra McFadden survive her. To A.D. Jackson who officiated her service and her friends who stuck with her during the hard times, may the Lord Bless You for your good deeds. Burial was next to her husband and son at East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, Texas. Pallbearers were Judge Joe Shuster, Tom Hardy, Allan Turner, Bake Turner, Billy Fichte, Tommy Turman; with honorary pallbearers being Martin Shuster and Michael Hardy. [081303edna.jpg] Edna Bond Pyle ODESSA Heaven received a most precious angel Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend was called to heaven to end her pain and suffering from her daughters home. Edna Pyle left her home in Arkansas to work as a riveter during World War II. After the war, she met and married Walter Bond in 1945. They brought six children into the world and proceeded to love and raise them. After Walters death in 1967, she married Clyde Pyle and joined their families with love and patience. As of today, she has 10 children, 34 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Most of these she left behind, some of them she joins in heaven. A member of Kingston Avenue Baptist Church for over 30 years, she taught a Sunday School class for most of that. She sang with the choir, always believing in praise through song. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at Odessa Regional Hospital for many years. Always generous with her time and love, her lap in the rocking chair was a welcome spot for all children. She believed the best way to get through life was with love and laughter, and always had an available smile. She will be loved and missed until we join her some day. Ednas family will be celebrating her life and receiving visitors at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, Oakwood and JBS Parkway, from 7 to 9 p.m. August 13, 2003, and welcomes all visitors. [081503gladys.jpg] Gladys Atkinson Suggs ODESSA Gladys Suggs, devoted daughter and sister, faithful wife, loving mother and grandmother and loyal friend, passed away on August 12, 2003, at Regency Hospital. She died from complications associated with the injuries she received in a vehicle accident that took the life of her husband, Joe M. Suggs, on June 3, 2003. Gladys Powell Atkinson Suggs was born on September 5, 1925, in Camden, New Jersey, to William Thomas Atkinson and Margaret Moore Atkinson. The summer after she graduated from high school, Gladys went to California to be a companion to an aunt whose husband was reported missing in action in WWII. While working in a soda shop in Los Angeles, Calif, Gladys met her future husband of 58 years, Joe Suggs. Family stories hint that their first meeting occurred when Gladys intervened and vouched for an unknown, yet obviously inebriated, sailor who was just about to get arrested by the Shore Patrol. After the war, Gladys moved to her husbands home state, Texas. At first, she disliked a few things about Texas especially being teased about her New Jersey accent, the sand storms and the fact that the Pacific Ocean was 1,200 miles away. Although she continued to dream about the California coast, Gladys grew to love Texas and acquired a drawl that was equal to that of many native Texans. Gladys, her husband, Joe, and baby daughter, Victoria Jane who was born on VJ Day, set up their first home in Wichita Falls, Texas, where Joe was using WWII G.l. benefits to be trained as a dental technician and serving in the National Guard. In 1946, Gladyss mother, dad, sisters and brother stopped in Wichita Falls as they were relocating to California. When they learned that Gladys was pregnant with her second child and that it was due only 15 months after the first child was born, they gave up their California opportunity in order to stay and provide support to Gladys and her growing family. After his training was completed, Joe Suggs got a job as a dental technician at the Crane Dental Laboratory in Big Spring, Texas. Due to the housing shortage after WWII, Gladys was faced with the task of caring for her family in an apartment building where several families shared one bathroom. She tackled that challenge as she did many future challenges in her life. She created and managed a schedule for all the families and established procedures for use that eliminated conflict. In 1950, Gladys, her husband and two daughters moved to Odessa where their third child, Joe M. Suggs Jr., was born and where they eventually established Suggs Dental Laboratory. Gladys loved being a wife and mother. She devoted her time and talents to parenting her three children, creating a secure and loving home, and providing strength, compassion, empathy and support to others as they faced difficult periods in their lives. She was a private person who did not need a large circle of friends, but she dearly loved the ones she did call friend. Gladys had a practical nature with a strong work ethic and sense of duty, but she could also be fun-loving and sassy. Along with their husbands, Gladys and her best friend, Mary Taylor, created a family get-a-way on Lake Sweetwater that became a secure, loving, fun part of many lives. This was especially true for her two grandsons who, when going through a difficult period in their young childhood, benefited greatly from the stability, love and fun provided by their grandmom and pop. While it is often easier to describe the life of individuals who have achieved success in their professional, social or volunteer activities, it is more difficult to describe the unique significance of a life that is primarily associated with such common words as wife, mother, grandmother and friend. To put it simply and accurately, Gladys Suggs spent her life, love, talents and energy on the important things the things that endure, the things that really matter. She was a woman who loved intensely and was truly the heart and soul of her family. The world is a better place because she was here and we all are better people because we knew her.
