Coonrod was born March 20, 1836 in Manlius, N.Y., the son of Mathias Conrad (b: 6 APR 1803 in Montbronn, Moselle, France) and Magdalene Gottfried (b: 9 APR 1810 in Montbronn, Moselle, France). Peter's grandfather, Caspar Conrad, age 60, left Montbronn, Moselle, France and arrived in New York City in 1834 with his wife and two sons. His oldest son, Mathias with wife and two children, and a daughter with her husband and a son arrived later in 1834. Caspar with his son-in-law bought 64 acres close to the Erie Canal in Manlius, N.Y. (now a suburb of Syracuse), and his son Mathias bought 25 acres nearby. Between 1857 and 1861, the widow of Caspar Conrad with her three sons sold their farms in Manlius N.Y. and bought land in Allen County, in a township south of New Haven Indiana and west of the farms owned by Huths(family from Somborn, Hesse, Germany) and Louis Joly (Montdidier, Moselle, France). In 1861, Peter Coonrod, son of Mathias, married Christina Huth and bought the farm from Erwein Huth, near the Joly farm. The Jolys, Schmuckers and Peter Coonrod attended St. Louis Besancon Church in the country between New Haven and the Ohio state border. In 1875, The Houston and Texas Central completed a section from the Oklahoma Indian Territory south to Galveston, and presumably was searching for people to buy low cost farm land near the division point, Ennis, Tex. About 1879, Sebastian Schmucker and his wife Elizabeth Joly, daughter of Louis Joly, moved to Ennis and bought a farm south of town. In 1883, Charles M. Joly, brother of Elisabeth Joly Schmucker, and husband of Josephine Gamet sold their Allen County farm and moved with some of their children to Ennis and bought a farm nearby to the Schmuckers. In 1885, Peter Coonrod, son of Mathias with wife Christina Huth Coonrod also moved with some of their children to Ennis, and bought a farm nearby to the Jolys and Schmuckers. There, Charles Joseph Joly met Clara Coonrod, daughter of Peter and Christina, and they were married in Ennis in 1887.
