Mitchell filed for a Widow’s Pension in September, 1932. Included in the application were several letters written by Frank E. Mitchell, her nephew, who filed on her behalf. Her pension was denied in January 1933. It was stated, "Since this report shows that Mr. Mitchell on September 16, 1863 took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States, he or any one claiming pension on such record would not be entitled to same under the law of Texas, and for this reason the application of Mrs. Clara L. Mitchell must be rejected." "The records show that one Silas Mitchell, Private, Company D, 10th (Johnson's) Regiment Kentucky Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted July 20, 1862, as on file, above that he was absent without leave. The Union Prisoner of War records show that he was captured July 4, 1863, at Henderson, Kentucky, and was released September 16, 1863 at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky, on taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. For a number of years Mr. Ickes engaged in interior decorating and w as employed at the Veterans Hospital for nine years prior to his retirement due to ill health. He was a veteran of World War I, and had been a member of the American Legion. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, a good neighbor and friend.
