Keller Dear Sir: It is with deep sorrow that I have to announce to you the death of your son, Private Robert M. Keller, who was killed in an engagement with the insurgents near Santa Lucia, Pueblo of Astorious, Cebu Island about 10:30pm the 29th ult. A detachment of 30 men of which your son was a member, commanded by Lieut Hincken, left this place on an expedition along the west coast of island on the evening of above date: While crossing a dry river bed in the vicinity of Santa Lucia they came upon an ambush of the enemy, who were strongly entrenched on the hillside of the opposite bank; they allowed our detachment to get very close to their trenches before they fired. During the engagement Liuet Hinken and five men were killed,your son being among the number. The remains were buried at this Post on the 31st ultimo with all military honors and in due time will be disinterred by the proper authorities and shipped to you if so desired, or placed in one of the National cemeteries in the United States. In view of the fact that this regiment is expecting to return to the United States very soon, I will hold all personal property of your son until I receive further instructions from you. In conclusion, I will say that your son was an ideal soldier, of excellent character and habits, one who stood high in the esteem of his comrades.
