J. Garland do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pension to be granted me under the Act passed by the 33rd Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved April 7, 1913, on the following grounds: I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the State of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate service, during said war I was Loyal and true to my duty and never at any time voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the said service; That I was honorably discharged at Fairfield, Freestone County at close of war. that I have been a bona fide citizen of this State since prior to Jan 1, A.D. 1900, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not hold any National, State, city or county office which pays me a salary or fee of $300.00 per annum, nor do I receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amount in value to the sum of $300.00 per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, nor does my wife own, nor does any one hold intrust for my wife estate or property, either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life of the assess value of over one thousand dollars. I have person property of the value of about $1000.00 and maybe a little more than that; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other State or from the United States, or from any other cource (on form, probably source?), and that I am not an inmate of the Confederate Home, and I do further State that the answers given to the following questions are true: 1. Lemmons known to me to the a credible citizen of the above State and County, and who, after being by me duly sworn, upon his oath deposes and says: I am a resident of the County of Brown, State of Texas and am 78 years old. I was a Confederate soldier and servied in the Val Verde Battery, Green's Regiment, Sibley's Brigade, Capt Jos. D. Sayers. I first knew applicant S. J. Garland about the year 1862, having met him at San Antonio, Texas in the Confederate Army and personally know he served as as soldier in the Confederate Army. He enlisted about 1862 at San Antonio, Texas in Bexar County, State of Texas in Company -------Regmiment Green's. He was private and volunteer. I did not know of any other soldier of the same name as applicant. He served until about May or June of 1865, on account of close of war. He was discharged near Texas and Louisiana line about May or June 1865. He served honorably, never deserted his command, nor voluntarily abandoned his post of duty or the service during the war. I was a Confederate soldier and served in company ---- Regiment Joe D Sayers' Val Verde Battery. I first knew S. J. Garland about 1861 and personally know he served as a soldier in the Confederate army. He enlisted about 1861 at San Antonio, in Bexar County, State of Texas in Company---- Regiment went into Sayer's Battery and served over 3 years. He was a private and a volunteer. i did not know of any other soldier of the same name as applicant. He served until about close of war in 1865 and was discharged at Shreveport, La about May 1865. He served honorably, never deserted his command, or voluntarily abandoned his post of dity or the service during the war. J. Garland Account must be itemized, but Mortuary Warrant will not be issured for more than Thirty dollars. The above account for Thirty dollars is just, due and unpaid. Garland, Deceased Confederate Pensioner File No. 28453 Ellis County, Texas The records of this office show that one S. J. Garland of Ellis County, Maypearl, Texas, filed application for Confederrate Pension in June, 1914 and the same was approved under file number 28453. He drew same untile his death December 27, 1920. The application of Mr. Garland states he enlisted in the spring of 1861 and served until spring of 1865 in Company F, 2nd Texas Cavalry, C. S. A. and also served inthe 12th Texas Artillery. His rank is not shown. The application for pension of Mr. Garland was approved on the affidavits of witnesses. Yours very truly, **************** Application for Mortuary Warrant State of Texas County of Ellis I, John Garland, do hereby certify that I am the person to whom is entrusted the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the late S. J. Garland, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas, and whole file number is 28453 and whose original county is Ellis. The said pensioner S. J. Garland, died on the 27th day of December 1920, in the town of Maypearl, County of Ellis, Texas. The pensioner died in the home of John Garland who was related to the pensioner as son. That the warrant, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the expenses incurred by the said pensioner________. I further certify that the warrrant for the current quarter has not been cashed by the pensioner, to the best of my knowledge and belief. I am related to the pensioner as son and that my home is in the town of Maypearl, County of Ellis, State of Texas, that my postoffice address is Maypearl, Texas. Signed: John Garland Before me S. C. Harrell in and for Ellis County, Texas Certificate of Undertaker I, Maypearl Hardware Co, do certify tht I am undertake in the town of Maypearl, County of Ellis, State of Texas and that I had chage of the body of Mr. S. J. Garland, who died in the town of Maypearl, County of Ellis, State of Texas on the 27th day of December 1920. That said body was prepared for burial by us on the 27th day of December 1920. That said body was buried in the Maypearl Cemetery, which is located in the County of Ellis, State of Texas, and that I am of the opinion that warrant herein applied for should be issured to the said Mrs. S. J. Garland in his last illness, and am of the opinion that his ailments were senility.
