Morris, do hereby make application for a pension pursuant to the provisions of Articles 6204 to 6227, inclusive, of the Revised Civil Statutes of 1925, as amended by H. B. No. 150, passed by the Forty-second Legislature at its Regular Session, and all other laws of this State relating thereto. I served as a Confederate soldier in the war between the States of the United States; or (that I was a soldier who under special laws of the State of Texas during said war served in organizations for the protection of the frontier against Indian raiders or Mexican marauders); or (that I was a soldier of the militia of the State of Tennessee who was in active service during said war). I served honorably from the date of my enlistment until the close of the war (or until I was discharged or paroled in some military organization regularly mustered into the army or navy of the Confederate States until the surrender). I was honorably discharged or surrendered 16th May 1865. I was captured Dec. 16th, 1864 near Nashville, Tennessee, and placed in prison at Camp Chase, Ohio. That I have been a bona fide resident of this State continuously since the 31st day of December A.D. 1880. 1. What is your age? 88 yr. Last Dec. 24th 2. In what county do you reside? Ellis 3. House, Justice of the Peace of Tarrant County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared Mrs. Elizabeth Summers, who is personally known to me to be a creditable citizen, who, being by me sworn, on oath states that (he or she) is personally acquainted with the foregoing applicant, and that the facts set forth and statements made in his application are correct and true, to the best of their knowledge and belief, and that (he or she) has no interest in this claim, and said applicant's habits are good and free from dishonor. And further make oath to the following facts touching the applicant's service in the Confederate Army: (Witness must state fully the source of their knowledge of applicant's service) I was born in Beth Page, Tennessee and lived neighbor to John W. Morris, and I remember him as a soldier in the Confederate army but do not remember regiment. I am now 79 years of age. C. Dear Sir: -- I have the honor to request the Military record of John W. Morris, who is reported to have enlisted in Company "E" Regiment ___, Tennessee Infantry, under Capt. W. Morris, also borne as John W. Morris, private, Company E, 24th Regiment Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States Army, was enrolled August 18, 1861, also shown as August 24, 1861, at Camp Trousdale, also shown as July 16, 1861, at Camp Anderson, age 18 years. Muster roll for March and April, 1864, last roll on file, shows him present. Union Prisoner of War records show that he was captured December 16, 1864, near Nashville, Tennessee, received January 2, 1865, at Military Prison, Louisville, Tennessee, transferred January 4, 1865, to Camp Chase, Ohio, at which place he was released May 15, 1865, on taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. His residence is shown as Sumner County, Tennessee, complexion dark, hair dark, eyes black, height 6 feet. John A. Baskerville was Captain of the above named organization. C. H. Morris, Deceased Confederate Pensioner File No. 50012 Ellis County The records of this office show that one John W. Morris of Midlothian, Ellis County, Texas, filed application for Confederate Pension in July, 1931 and the same was granted under file number 50012. He drew a pension until his death on December 3, 1933. John W. Morris was a private in Company E, 24th Regiment of Tennessee Infantry, C. S. A. He enlisted August 18, 1861 and served until May, 1865. The application for pension of Mr. Morris was approved on a report from the Adjutant General, War Department, Washington, D. C. Comptroller of Public Accounts ************** APPLICATION FOR MORTUARY WARRANT THE STATE OF TEXAS County of Ellis I, J. A. Morris, do hereby certify that I am the person to whom is entrusted the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the late John W. Morris, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas, and whose file number is 50012 and whose original county was Ellis. The said pensioner John W. Morris, died on the 3rd day of Dec. 1933, in the town of Midlothian, County of Ellis, Texas. The pensioner died in the home of J. A. Morris who was related to the pensioner as son. That the warrant, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the funeral expenses incurred by the said pensioner John W. Morris. I further certify that the warrant for the current quarter has not been cashed by the pensioner, to the best of my knowledge and belief. Boze, do certify that I am undertaker in the town of Waxahachie, County of Ellis, State of Texas, that I had charge of the body of John W. Morris, who died in the town of near Midlothian, County of Ellis, State of Texas on the 3rd day of Dec. 1933. That said body was prepared for burial by me on the 3rd day of Dec. 1933, and that I am of the opinion that warrant herein applied for should be issued to the said J. A. Morris in his last illness, and am of the opinion that his ailments were senility. I further certify that I am of the opinion that the Mortuary Warrant above requested should be issued in the name of the aforementioned applicant, in accordance with Act passed by the Thirty-eighth Legislature and approved March 2, 1923. Morris, who, after being by me duly sworn on oath, says that he is the true owner of Confederate Mortuary Warrant No 20485 for the sum of One Hundred & 00/100 Dollars, drawn by the Comptroller of the State of Texas, on 12-11-33, in favor of J. A. Morris, and that the same is in fact lost or destroyed, or has not been received. (Signed) J. A. Ferguson, Governor of the State of Texas, and his successors in office, in the sum of Two Hundred & 00/100 Dollars, for the payment of which sum, well and truly to be made, we do bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally. Whereas, the above named principal has filed with the Comptroller ... affidavit, stating that he is the true owner of said Confederate Mortuary Warrant, drawn by the Comptroller of the State of Texas, on the date shown in the above affidavit, in favor of said payee, and that the same is in fact lost or destroyed; and Whereas, duplicate of said Confederate Mortuary Warrant, in favor of the original payee, will be issued; Now, therefore, the condition of the above obligation is such that the owner of said warrant will hold the State harmless and return to the Comptroller, upon demand being made therefor, such duplicate or copies, or the amount of money named therein, together with all costs that may accrue against the State, on collecting the same.
