Atwood,JP Boren, NB Feagins, Joe Kucera, and D.B. White. Confederate Home investigation. July 23, Austin. After more than two hours of discussion the House refused to hear Dr. J.C. Loggins, superintendent of the Confederate Home, whose resingation is requested in the report of the committee, and adopted by a vote of 77 to 20. The report of the committee charges that sanitary conditions at the home are extremely bad. The allegation was brought that rooms occupied by the inmates received no attention except from the men themselves, despite the fact that an apporpriation is made for Janitory hire. Mr. O'Banion, sopke for the committee, said there ins now a balance to the credit of the home of more than $5000 for hire of employee which should have been used to keep the buildings in a sanitary condition. Mr. Tidwell and Mrs. Johnson of Ellis spoke in defense of Dr. Loggins. Mr. Tidwell stated the condition of the buildings is such that it would be impossible to be kept in a sanitary condtion. He blamed the legistlature with conditions when they failed to appropriate funds for better buildings. Committee: J.D. Newton, Chairman; M.M. O'Banion, John D. McLeon, O.A. Sweard WP Alexander. H.R. Sayeg has purchased the property occupied by Jones' cafe and the People's State Bank and will construct a steel and hollow tile with ornamental brick front theater, the equal of which will not be seen in any town the size of Ennis in the county. Seating capacity to be 1200. A large pipe organ. Cost $50,000 Marshall Summers, colored, aged 70 years and blind for the past 40 years, whose home is in Ennis, got license here to marry Annie Wood, aged 50 who lives in Corsicana. As a boy he worked in the blacksmith shop for Judge Kerr on the lot where the Mulkey house now stands. He lived in Corsicana before the civil War. Mrs. Sallie McDuffie dies in Washington DC following a stroke of paralysis. Burial there. Formerly of Ennis. Sister-in-law of W.J. McDuffie and Mrs. O.E. Dunlap. Survived by daughter Miss Sallie McDuffie. Mr. and Mrs. Abe Carroll received a message telling of the death of Dr. Rand McFadden at Milford. Mrs. C. Zerwer and Mrs. Allen Joyner visited in Kaufman for the weekend. Leroy King Jr celebrates his Fourth Birthday Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. L.R. King honere her little son, Leroy, Jr. with a party on his fourth birthday at their ome on North Clay Street. About 25 little guests were present and enjoyed among the many amusements, pinning the Red Cross on the Red Cross dog, drawing baloons from the fishing pond, and in cutting the pretty birthday cake many gifts were found. Ice Cream cones were served to the little guests. Dr. Bell P. Lowry left on the 3:30 car Friday afternoon for Chicago, where she will attend the National Osteopath Association. From there she will go to the old home at Cecilian, KY for a six weeks visit. Miss Louise Latimer hosted at a miscellaneous shower given in her home in honor of Miss Lelia Chandler whose marriage to Mr. sam Reed of Paris will take place soon. Mis Mildred Cook of Duncan, OK, is a guest in the home of her aunt, Mrs. Emmett Smith. Wesley Goodwin has resumed his position with the Castellaw Drug Co after 23 months in the army. He had a checkered career including a lolng siege of pneumonia but came back apparently well and hearty. Born to Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Germon on June 21, a fine girl, "Dad" says this is the first girl born in the German family in forty years and he is wearing a million dollar smith. Bardwell Herald. Corsicana. July 1. Fred Beere, 15 years old, inmate of the State Orphans Home who was seriously injured a week ago when he fell from the roof of a storehouse at the home, died Sunday afternoon and was buried at the home cemetery Monday morning. Mrs. J.W. Purcell went to Hearne to join her husband, who holds a position there.
