For a good many years many Bohemian people have been coming here from their native country and settling in and around Ennis. They are mostly farmers and in some communities in Ellis County almost the entire population are Bohemians. They are industrious and frugal and many of them have accumulated property. They learn enough English very readily to transact business with American people, yet they do their own conversing in their native tongue. They are for the most part Catholics in their religious. Until two or three years ago they have attended St. Joseph's Catholic church in this city, listening to an English speaking priest only occasionally having a visit from a priest of their own nationality. Finally they became so numerous and sufficiently well-to-do that they decided to build a church of their own and now they have a handsome and commodious house of worship at the corner of Paris and Lampasas. This is known as St. John's church of which the Rev. Joseph Ptanski is priest in charge. Sunday was the day for the dedication of this new sanctuary and a large congregation was present. The Right Rev. E.J. Dunne, DD bishop of Dallas, was present to officiate. A visit by Bishop Dunne to our city is always looked upon as a great favor, because of his great eminence as a divine and for the reason of his prominence in the church. Rev. Father Serefino of Bonham was also present and was the celebrant at High Mass and preached the dedicatory sermon in the Bohemian tongue. Bishop Dunne was assisted in the ceremonies by Fr. Serefino of Bonham, and Fr. Malone of St. Josephs' and FR. Ptanski of St. John's Besides the solemn and impressive dedication ceremonies, a very pretty feature of the occasion was the confirmation of a class of 115 young people into the full communion of the Catholic church. These people are to be congratulated on their growth as a church and upon possession of so splendid a house of worship. D.D. Starke, aged 46 years, died Friday at Telico with black jaundice.
