LESTER If the history of Ennis were to be written, or if a momument were to be erected to those who have done the most for the good and well-being of this town and community, the name of Mr. H. T. Lester would be at the top of the list. For near a half century this modest, quiet and un-assuming gentlemen of culture, learning, and caring instructed our young. Those who can attest to the greatness of his work are legion and the beneficial results of his service and sacrifice shall live on forever in the lives and succeeding lives of those whom he has taught. To know him is to love him and lucky indeed are those who have been so richly privileged to have been his pupils, for their lives and learning have been enriched in all things that are good and true. From the beginning, he was a model teacher and the favorite of all of his pupils, and somewhat on the stern side when instructions were underway, his charm endeared him to all of us. Even the slowest learned and grew in knowledge in his classroom and all of his students always have and still do love him the best. Besides teaching every day for so many years, he did thousands of un-named and un-noticed acts far beyond the call of duty. The future youth of Ennis will no longer be touched by the life of this great man. He has now been called by the Father of all to cross over the great divide. To the last night he was most active and quite young in mind and spirit. But his spirit will linger on in the halls of Ennis High School until the walls of the present edifice are no more. What a life this wonderful man of culture, learning, and refinement has lived in our midst! What an example he has been for both pupils and teachers everywhere! How long his blessed influence and memory will live in the hearts of those whom he has taught and instructed. We could always go to him with our most serious personal problems that we "could not talk to Dad about!" Our lives will seem lonely, his former pupils and friends and no doubt too, there will be a most lonely feeling in a great Spartan heart. But as long as the school lasts, so long as the Spirit of Ennis High School itself lives, the name and memory of Mr. Lester will continue to live in behalf of better teaching and education. We loved and appreciated you, Mr. Lester, for all that you are and all that you have meant to us and you will always be a part of us as long as we live. You have earned a rest many times before now, although you have never taken one, and we know that you will never cease to always be busy and helpful to others. Though the class may be dismissed, you will live in our hearts forever as well as our posterity. Your life has been of geat service and so long as we have more like you left, this country will continue to be great and worth fighting for. As they say in Latin; "tempes fugate" (how time flies). It seems that it was only yesterday that Mr. Lester walked into our second grade class and asked Miss Vela Bell to hold off long enough for him to make Herschel take his dose of cough syrup in front of our class. Please accept this letter as a little token of our love, esteem and appreciation. This world knows little of its' greatest man.
