Rufus Andrew McCain, 89, Ellis County pioneer, died at his home here Friday night following a long illness. Mr. McCain was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter McCain who came to Texas in a covered wagon in 1865 first settling in Red River County, later moving to Ellis Count in the Bee Creek community west of Italy. Upon his marriage in 1877 his parents presented him with a large wall clock which had been in use for more than fifty years. The gift was on condition that the son would wind the clock at c o'clock each evening, that being he hour of his wedding. Mr. McCain has often stated that few evenings had passed during the sixty-five years that he had failed to carry out his parents request. Mr. McCain was a member of the Milford Presbyterian Church. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Annie Todd, Italy; Mrs. Johnnie Hensley, Dallas; Mrs. Ethel Hensley, Fort Worth; Mrs. Gladys Johnson, Dallas, Mrs. Ruby Few, Milford; Mrs. Pauline Horton, Dallas, and Horace McCain, Italy; two sisters, Mrs. R.D. Harris, Italy and Mrs. Amanda Cornwell, Maypearl and fifteen grandchildren. NOTES: The date is 30 May 1942. Rufus is buried in Milford Cemetery.
