Mr. Roe had been ill since his ninetieth birthday, celebrated eight days ago. Born in Kentucky, he came to Texas with an uncle and settled on a farm near Ovilla. When 16 he enlisted in the Confederate Army and was a member of Parson's Brigade and the Nineteenth Texas Infantry. After the close of the war, Mr. Roe married Miss Sally Pogue of Ellis County. Part of the home which he built that year is still standing. Hauled by oxwagon, the lumber came from East Texas. The Ellis County pioneer remembered when there was no house but his between Waxahachie and Mansfield. A large section of that part of the country was black prairie over which roamed thousands of wild horses, cattle and game. Until three years ago, Mr. Roe was active in the cultivation of his farm and was able to read without glasses until about two years ago. On his eighty-fourth birthday he built a brick chimney for the house in which he has lived for sixty-five years. The first Mrs. Roe died in 1879. Surviving children of this union are Frank Roe, Mrs. Laura Seagroves and Miss Estelle Roe, all of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Lula Fowler, Mansfield; Mrs. Gertrude Putnam, Forth Worth, and Mrs. Sadie Cavender, Denver, Colo. In 1894 Mr. Roe married Miss Emma Josephine Sullivan of Memphis, Tenn. Children by this marriage are Ewell T. Roe and Mrs. Ora Kelly, Waxahachie; Mrs. Louis Green, Forth worth; Mrs. Nettie Bennett, Midland; the Rev. Allen Roe, Austin, and Grady Roe, who lives on the homestead. The Rev. J. L. Ray, Methodist circuit pastor, and E. R. Patterson, pastor at Bethel, officiated at the funeral. Additional Comments: I don't know what publication this came from. It was sent to me by Ann T.
