She came with her family to Texas from Taylor Co GA around 1886. She was born Jan 17, 1869 in Taylor Co GA. In Alma she met and married William Flacher Sands on January 25, 1889. He was a great deal older than Mattie being 41 and born in Monroe Co MS Nov 29, 1847. His father, Benjamin Franklin Sands moved his family from Mississippi arriving in Texas Dec 11, 1857. They first settled at Price Cross Roads which is near Rice, and later moved to Chatfield. Mattie was always known as "Sister" and all the younger siblings depended on her. After her husband's death in 1916, she supported herself and younger son by running a boarding house for traveling salemen. They were known as "drummers" -- crisscrossing the country drumming up business for large companies.
