January 10 2000 Return to top Hooten, Edward Joseph an Army veteran and Deming political leader, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000). He served in the Army Air Corps and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and rated as a pilot. He was eventually transferred to the Deming Army Air Field in 1943 as an instructor and served as a B-17 pilot until his discharge in 1945. He stayed in Deming and was appointed as clerk and treasurer of Deming. He helped reorganize the New Mexico National Guard and served as the commander of the Deming unit until he was called to active duty in 1950 for the Korean War. After serving in Korea for two years, he returned to his position with the city. In 1957, he was appointed as the first Deming city dministrator and served in that capacity for many years. In 1968, he was promoted to brigadier general and assigned as the assistant adjutant general of the state of New Mexico. He retired from the New Mexico National Guard as a major general after 37 years of service. During his career, he received many civilian and military honors. Survivors include his wife, Isabelle; his sons, Carl Hooten, Joe Hooten, James Hooten, Pat Hooten and Tom Hooten; his daughters, Kay Jenkins, Anna Milo, Carol Rodriguez and Lisa Brown; 28 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
