Zach White built the area's first water and sewer system and was also the founder and builder of the Paso del Norte hotel Downtown, which he opened in 1912. The hotel was a center of El Paso society for decades. At one time Zach White owned most of what is West El Paso, from the Sunland Park area to the country club and Willows areas. Because her parents were often traveling the world, Massey spent a lot of time with her grandfather and often retold many of the stories she heard from him, businessman Jim Paul, a friend of the Massey family, said. Massey "could tell so many stories" about what life was like in early El Paso, Paul said. But Massey was legendary in her own right as well, he said. "It was only a year and a half ago that she went over to Paris, rented a car and drove herself through the 'chunnel,' the tunnel under the English Channel. And when she was 79, she bought a red Acura sports car and insisted that they put a spoiler on it for her," Paul said. "El Paso has lost one of its real treasures," Paul said. "Everybody who knew her knows that she was absolutely one of the finest women ever to grace this city. I have never been around a woman with as strong a presence as she had. Her nickname was 'Bubbles' because she had an incredible ability to make everyone around her happy, and she was so caring and did so many philanthropic things for the downtrodden that nobody ever knew about." Massey was the wife of William L. Massey, who died in 1991. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William L. and Anne Massey of Houston; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Thomas Paul of Austin; and four grandchildren.
