December 27 2000 Return to top Alexander, George L. a retired U.S. Army colonel and a medical doctor, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000). He was 79 and lifelong resident of El Paso. He was a graduate of West Point and later was an instructor there. He served in the 311 Field Artillery Battalion in World War II in 1944, was a batallion commander in Korea, served on the Atomic Energy Commission and was senior Army adviser for the Republic of Vietnam Military Academy in 1970 and 1971. He received many medals and commendations for his military service, including the Purple Heart. He later became an anesthesiologist and was a resident at three hospitals in El Paso. Survivors include his son, George L. Alexander and Donald K. Alexander; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, June K. Alexander.
