He was 76 and at the time of his death was chairman of the board for Ruidoso State Bank. Pennington was living in Amarillo. He had been a member of the El Paso Sheriff's Posse as well as the Rotary Club and served on the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee. Over the years he was honored for his civic involvement by many organizations, including the El Paso Rehabilitation Center, Young Matrons Association, El Paso Ballet Association, El Paso Symphony Guild and University of Texas at El Paso. He was a former Man of the Year for the El Paso Chapter of the American Heart Association. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Pennington; his daughter, Paige Pennington Moore; his sons, Kurt Pennington and John P. Pennington Jr.; his brother, Roy Pennington; his sister, Grace Sullivan; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church, Amarillo.
