March 18 2001 Return to top Cassady, Emmett Buckner Major General (USAF, Ret) October 21, 1909 - March 15, 2001 passed away on March 15, 2001 in El Paso, Texas. A native son of Texas and the transportation age, he was born in Gainesville, Texas on October 21, 1909, the second son of a railroad man (Hopkins Stuart Cassady) and his young wife (Emma Amanda Kleuser). In 1927, when he graduated from Gainesville High School, his mother, under pressure, purchased a World War I Canuck-type training plane and engaged Wiley Post to instruct Emmett in the art of flying. The aircraft crashed at Hillsboro, Texas two weeks later, with Emmett and a substitute instructor aboard. They were uninjured, but the aircraft was a total wreck. A licensed aviator since 1929 he enlisted as a Private in the Army Air Corps Reserve in 1930 at Hensley Field in Dallas, Texas. He met Willie Virginia (Billie) Odom, a beautiful young woman and daughter of a west Texas rancher in 1933 and they were married in 1934. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1933 and received his Air Corps Wings at the same time. Europe was at war and he returned to active duty in February 1941 and continued in active service until he retired as an Air Force Major General in January 1965. He served in a wide range of challenging positions: Aide de Camp to the General commanding the Northeast Command in St. Johns, Newfoundland at the onset of WW II; Executive Officer to the General commanding the Central Flying Training Command when the command was opening a new training base each week to provide the pilots and aircrew members for the Air Corps; and Air Attache with the US Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay. After WW II Colonel Cassady was asked about the special challenges of flying long range missions in Consolidated PBYs to provide air cover for convoys on their vulnerable passage through the Greenland - Iceland gap. He replied that it was ''waking up from a short nap and finding my copilot did not know where the aircraft was over the North Atlantic -- in winter.'' Luck was with him that day. He caught a glimpse of the setting sun, took a fix on it and flew west until they hit the coast of Labrador. He then turned south and followed the coast to the air base at St. Johns, Newfoundland. The onset of the Cold War brought new challenges: a tour at the Pentagon with the Air Staff as Chief, Air Attache Branch and then a posting as Air Attache to the US Embassy in Rome, Italy. Clare Booth Luce was the US Ambassador and the task was to stem the tide of Soviet influence in Italy. Emmett and Billie worked as a closely-knit team to support the Ambassador in many and varied diplomatic assignments. Later, after Emmett was advanced to Brigadier and Major General he received the Distinguished Service Medal. The citation prominently mentioned that he ''helped retain Italy in the column of free nations.'' It had clearly been a team effort. Returning to the US brought staff assignments with the Air Material Command at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio and command ot the Air Material Area at Brookley AFB, Mobile, AL in 1960. General Cassady was responsible for the worldwide support of several weapons systems including the Republic F-105. When he took command in Mobile the F-105 had serious maintenance problems that put its reliability and therefore its utility at issue. He initiated management changes and corrective actions that enabled the F-105 to be employed as a reliable and significant component of Air Force combat force structure in the Vietnam War. Emmett and Billie retired from the Air Force in 1965 and later moved from Mobile to El Paso. His wife Billie passed away in 1993. His brother George Cassady, also an Air Force Brigadier General, died in 1967. General Cassady's children were at his side at his death. Son William Cassady, Colonel (USAF, Ret) resides in Austin, TX, daughter Colleen Drake in Santa Fe, NM and daughter Anna Bryson in Laguna Niguel, CA. Surviving grandchildren are Colleen Cassady, Austin, TX, Kristin Hickson, Newport Beach, CA, Elaine Tatum, Miami Beach, FL, Katherine Palafox, El Paso, TX, William Gunter, Miami Beach, FL, Elizabeth Drake, Boulder, CO, Elizabeth Axelgard, Sacramento, CA and Erin Cornay, Sacramento, CA.
