The world has lost a friend, because Bill Becker never met a stranger. Born in Navasota, Texas, on February 21, 1914, he attended San Jacinto High School in Houston, Texas; New Mexico Military Institute; and University of Texas, where in 1935 he earned his degree in business administration from University of Houston. Marrying Martha Gardner in 1940, they moved to McAllen, Texas when Bill started a retail appliance business. Bill served in WWII as an army tank commander in the Philippines, attaining the rank of major. After the war, Bill returned to McAllen to resume his business career. In 1959, he moved to El Paso, Texas, to start the Muzak franchise with his friend Alfred King. Bill was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He served on the boards of El Paso Rehabilitation Center, YMCA, Cancer Treatment Center, Goodwill Industries, and the El Paso Symphony. He was on the Executive Committee of the Sun Carnival Association and the Team Selection Committee for the Sun Bowl and a member of the Vestry of St. Clement's Episcopal Church, Kiwanis and Los Caballeros, Colenneh Club. Bill Becker retired in 1981. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Martha G. Becker, sisters Clara Becker Johnson and Ella Becker Martin. He is survived by his widow, Olive Horne Becker of Houston, his daughter and son-in-law Kay and Jim Harvey of Friendswood, Texas, his son and daughter- in-law Jed and Kay Becker, his daughter and son-in-law Kyle and Tres Hendrix all of El Paso, Texas; grandchildren Nathan Harvey and his wife Cynthia of Houston, Texas, Mary Kay Harvey of Odessa, Texas, Melinda Becker, Jessica Becker and Ryan Hendrix of El Paso. He had been a resident of El Paso since 1928. Mr. Carrasco was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 59 years. He was a construction and millwright worker and belonged to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He enjoyed bowling and was a City Bowling Champion at the White Elephant in 1958. Mr. Carrasco is survived by his wife, Julia Olivas Carrasco, son, Manuel J. Mr. Sheffield was a 32nd degree Master Mason with El Paso Lodge No. 130 and the Scottish Rite. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Navy, after which he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. She will also be remembered for her many hours of work in acts of kindness within her community, and within her extended family, always with an open and kind heart.
