Barratt, Louise Lacy born June 4, 1931 in Weslaco, Texas, passed away May 30, 2001 in El Paso, Texas. Louise was a graduate of Texas Western College, now the University of Texas-El Paso, and taught math at Bel-Air High School for 17 years before leaving to pursue her real passion-painting. A long- time resident of El Paso, Louise spent her later years with her loving husband, John living in Ruidoso, New Mexico, the beauty of which inspired many of her artworks. She exhibited in countless shows and was honored with numerous awards. In addition, she was a respected member of several art associations including the Alla Prima International Water Color Society. Louise was especially proud of her participation in DIVA (Diversity in Visual Arts), a group of noted women artists from El Paso that met to discuss new ideas and critique each other's work. That artistic collaboration culminated in "Desert Echo: Women Illuminate the Sacred", a book of poetry illustrated with the paintings of the DIVA group. Her works are on display at the Dallas Women's Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, and in corporate and private collections throughout the U.S. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Lucille Lacy and her brother Joseph Lacy. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John E. Barratt; daughter, Cynthia Louise Barratt and husband, Nat Adkins; daughter, Jody Scherr and husband, Jay; daughter, Jonny Ruth Gubachy and husband, James. Louise called her grandchildren Jason, Jamie and Jasmine Scherr and Sarah Ruth Gubachy the "light of my life". They adored her and will miss her dearly. OLD, MARGARET LORENE COWHERD 92 years of age, passed away May 26, 2001 at her residence in El Paso. She was born Sept. 18, 1908 in Newton, Ks. She moved to El Paso when she was age 5. She graduated from El Paso High School in 1927 and married Harold O. Old on Dec. 24, 1932. She was one of the first classes of women to be accepted at the College of Mines (UTEP) and graudated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree on August 19, 1938. She was a member of the El Paso Art Association, Texas Fine Arts League, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was a former student of the widely acclaimed art teacher Vera Wise, and developed her own talents as a water color artist and has had pictures accepted in national, state, and local jury exhibitions. She was honored by the Pilot Club for her talents as a teacher in the El Paso schools and was retired after many years of service as a fourth grade teacher at Crockett Elementary School. Mrs. Old is preceded in death by her husband Harold Old. She is survived by her daughter Shannon Osborne and son-in-law Kenneth Osborne and two grandchildren; Daran and Tanner, all of San Diego, Ca., sister Florence Cowherd Nunnally of Gail, Tx., seven nieces and nephews, and eleven great nieces and nephews. June 3 2001 Return to top THOM, HOMER CLYDE born on July 12.19 20 in Solon, Maine, Homer Clyde Thom was the youngest of five children. The son of a Methodist minister and pharmacist, Mr. Thom in his young life moved to Illinois, Colorado, Iowa, and then to California, After graduating from San Diego High School in June. 1938, he was an Assistant Chief Clerk for Bank of America for several years before being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. Serving as an infantryman in the European theater of operations, be earned a Bronze Star for his combat actions in 1945. After his discharge from the military, Mr. Thom returned to California, where he eventually met and married Miriam Ethel Hurst. He rejoined the U. S. Army in 1948 and remained in the military to complete a 20-year career. During his military career he saw additional combat in the Korean Conflict, had two peacetime tours of duty in Korea, and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. After retirement from the U.S. Army as the Sergeant Major of the 6th Artillery Group at Fort Bliss, Texas in 1967, Mr. Thom embarked on a second career with Prudential Insurance Company, from which he retired in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Miriam, and six children- Michael Thom, La Mesa, California; Jeanne Thom Obee, Rockford, Illinois, Brian Thom, Harker Heights, Texas; Janice Thom Carr, Las Cruces, New Mexico; Jonathan Thom, Troutdale, Oregon; and Ruth Thom, Portland, Maine. He was born March 5, 1947 in Hatch to Jose V. and Virginia Guerra Torres. At the time of his death, Mr. Torres was employed by Furr's Supermarket as a Manager and was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in El Paso, Texas. WEIDLER, MARGARET MANKER, Peggy was born Nov. 1915 2001 in El Paso and went to be with her beloved LORD on June 1 while living in Garland, Texas. She was brought up in the First Baptist Church. Her parents were Arthur and Edith Manker. Her sisters were Evelyn Burrows Womack, who preceded her in death, and Hazel Davis Luca of El Paso. She outlived two husbands, Parke Weidler (1992) and Jack Hershey (1997). She is survived by two daughters, Bobble and Dudley Perry of Mesquite, TX and Lynn Parker of Rowlette, TX. grandson Elliott Parker and granddaughter Christy and John David Smitherman and her great-grandson Cade. Her brother-in-law is Bill Lucas and her sister-in-law is Catherine Weidler. Nieces are Sherry Davis Kramm and Sally Weidler. Nephews are Gary Davis and David Weidler. The Weidlers spent 16 years in Venezuela and several years in other states. They were members of Western Hills Methodist Church. Peggy was a very wonderful, loving and caring person. Preceded in death by his wife Peggy and son John Charles Hamilton. Survived by his brothers Bob and Dan Hamilton of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a countless extended family of close friends and colleagues. Dr. Hamilton had battled cancer for many years and his treatments included intense experimental processes that will ultimately benefit mankind in conquering this devastating disease. The Weidlers spent 16 years in Venezuela and several years in other states. They were members of Western Hills Methodist Church. Peggy was a very wonderful, loving and caring person. Jr., beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, was called home by the Good Lord on Thursday, May 31, 2001. He will always be remembered for his enduring love for his family and his love for serving the needs of all people. During his journey on this earth, he touched the lives of many people through his work, his play and his devotion to God. Ralph was born in El Paso, Texas on September 20, 1944. He was schooled at home once a week until his family won a class action lawsuit for the right of disabled children, including Ralph, to attend public schools. Ralph began high school at the age of 18 and went on to serve as Student Council President and garner numerous awards and recognition for his academic and volunteer achievements. Ralph attended the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), graduating with a degree In Political Science and Education. He was very active in political and civic activities. During this time in his life, Ralph also worked with his father at The Roadway Inn, one of El Paso's most popular restaurants. After graduating from UTEP, Ralph started his career with the federal government and went to work for the U.S. small Business Administration in El Paso. He progressed quickly into management and transferred to San Antonio in 1980 to assume the position of Assistant District Director for Minority Small Business and Capital Ownership Development, which he held until his retirement last year, Ralph's solid reputation for fairness was known throughout the country and his guidance and advice were constantly sought by people from all walks of life. Ralph made it his goal to help empower people by encouraging them to tap into their own human energy. He was also an outstanding speaker who was in constant demand by the business and civic community throughout the State of Texas. After retirement, Ralph pursued his life-long dream of establishing his own business and started Disability Employment Opportunity, Inc. (DEO). DEO was formed to meet the challenge of providing job opportunities to the disable community. DEO also became a National Industries for the Severely Handicap (NISH) Work Center. Ralph's hard work and dedication recently garnered the company contracts dedicated to the employment of persons with disabilities. He was a dermatologist at William Beaumont Medical Center, Texas Tech University, and in solo private practice in El Paso from 1980 until March 2000. Born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas; his parents are Carl and Mabel Barnes. After graduating from high school, he served three years in the U. S. Army, returning to Hutchinson to attend the Community College. In July 1961, he married Mary Ann Calentine, also of Hutchinson. Two years later he graduated from Kansas State University and in 1967 from the University of Kansas Medical School. Internship year was spent at Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft. Lewis, Washington. He became a board-certified dermatologist in 1971, following the completion of residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and certification examinations. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, the American Academy of Dermatology, Texas Medical Association, the Southwest Dermatological Association, and the El Paso County Medical Society. Dr. Barnes, who loved books and reading, is survived by his wife Mary, who is a librarian at St. Clement's Episcopal Parish School, their sons and daughter-in-laws: Christopher and Anne Barnes, of Silverdale, Washington; and Alex and Carolyn Barnes of Denver, Colorado. Mr. Mathis worked for the Santa Fe Railroad before joining the U.S. Army serving from 1943 through 1946. After an honorable discharge from the Army, he resumed working for the railroad. He then went to work for Continental Airlines from where he retired. A member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church for more than 66 years. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1950. Edmunds, Edward Jr., born September 2, 1921, in Weston, Mass., passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2001. Mr. Edmunds graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1942 with a degree in chemical engineering and later served as a test pilot with the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, testing all types of aircraft to determine their suitability for combat. Following his service to his country, he began his professional career in Baltimore where he met Charlotte Cornish of Albuquerque. They married in 1948 and settled in 1949 where he founded Edmunds Chemical Co. In 1969, Edmunds Chemical and the Schwartz Companies of El Paso merged to form S.E.C. Corporation of El Paso. The Edmunds' moved to El Paso later that year and have resided there since that time. Other business interests in El Paso included Guynes Printing Company, Foster Mold & Edmunds Real Estate. In addition to his Business leadership, Edmunds was an active tennis player and won many tournaments in the Southwest Region. He served as president of The Southwest Tennis Association, Vice President of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, and President of the Board for the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club. Mr. Edmunds also served as president of the El Paso Cancer Treatment Center and was a board member of The Rio Grande Cancer Foundation. His recent years have been spent managing Edmunds Real Estate, LLC. Ed is survived by his wife, Charlotte, daughters Marion Delanoy and her husband Rich, of Denver, Anne Figone and her husband Lou of Sonoma, Ca., Elizabeth McBee and her husband Doug also of Sonoma, and his sons Ted Edmunds and his wife Valerie of El Paso, and Gillette Edmunds and his wife Kathleen of Oakland, Ca; nine grandchildren: Elizabeth and Allison Edmunds, Ben, Molly, Kenny, and Casey Delanoy, and Jesse, Ellis, and Oliver Edmunds. He was a member of the Eastwood Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife Claudine, son and daughter-in-law Craig and Monica Hays and daughter Elaine Hays who reside in El Paso. Jr. (Bob) passed away on Monday, June 4, 2001 after a lengthy illness. He was 78 years old and a native of El Paso. He graduated from El Paso High School followed by receiving a B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia. Bob was a proud member of the U.S. Navy Submarine Services serving in World War II. In 1945, Bob joined his father's cotton merchandising firm, R.T. Hoover & Co. Inc. He served on the boards of several cotton related organizations including: National Cotton Council, former president of Western Cotton Shippers Association, American Cotton Shippers Association, as well as the advisory boards of the Agricultural Departments of Texas A & M Research Center and New Mexico State University. Bob was an active member in the El Paso community serving on the boards of the United Way of El Paso County, Mountain Bell, El Paso Chamber of Commerce, St. Clement's Parish School, Texas Commerce Bank-El Paso, and Providence Memorial Hospital. He was a Senior Warden at the Pro Cathedral Church of St. Clement as well as a former president of the Rotary Club of El Paso.
