Millican, Anna Jane Derrick On 12 June 2001, Anna Jane Derrick Millican, age 71, graduated from the bonds of earth to join her Heavenly Father. She was a loving mother, wife, teacher, and friend. She was an honor student at Myra Winkler Grade School, Ysleta High, and College of Mines (UTEP) and got her Masters Degree from the University of New Mexico. When she finished her continuing formal education, she was six hours short of a PHD but thought such additional education would be irrelevant to the high schoolers she was teaching. As a master teacher for 30 years, she never met a student she didn't love. She taught in El Paso, TX, Las Vegas, NV, Albuquerque, NM, Honolulu, HI, and Weatherford, TX. While she taught Shakespeare with passion and verve, her greatest achievement may have come when she taught the roots, suffixes, and prefixes of English words to groups of kids who were previous drop-outs, dopers, and under achievers. They all passed (some with 100's) the same test that other kids in accelerated classes did not. Though she retired from formal teaching, she was an exciting and animated teacher for many beginning quilters in the Enchanted Quilters of Alamogordo. Also, she won county, state, and international quilting awards as well as publishing numerous 'how-to' articles in national quilting magazines. After a year long courageous fight with cancer, she passed peacefully knowing that she had done her best. She lived her life for others. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jim, 2 daughters and their husbands; Jamie Millican and Thomas Cottrell; Karen Millican and David Newlander and grandson Hunter Newlander; son David Millican; sister Sue Gage; brothers Kenneth and Billy Derrick; and numerous relatives and friends around the world. There will be a Memorial Service at the High Rolls Methodist Church on 18 June at 10:00 am for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Alamogordo Hospice, 505 East 11th, Alamogordo, NM 88310, or the Paragon Foundation, dedicated to preserving our individual freedoms, 100 North White Sands Blvd. #110, Alamogordo, NM 88310.
