El Paso Co. Tx. Obits from the El Paso Times, June 24-30, 2001 Submitted by: Dorris Harrison Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ------------------------------------------------ June 24 2001 COOK, DR. CLARENCE SHARP passed away on June 12, 2001 at 7:30 in the morning, just shy of 83 years of age. His wife, Marian Waring Cook, was by his side at the time of death. He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Sherma Cook; his son and his son's family, Wayne, Diana, Matthew, and Aaron Cook; two cousins and their husbands, Paul and Anne Demitriades and Johnny and Pat Watson; and four nieces and their families; Steve and Ronnie Hardin, Jim and Sheila Lotspeich, Rami and Yvonne Gonzalez, and Ferdi and Diane de Souza. His family and friends will miss him for his loving compassion and sense of humor. C. Sharp and Marian came to El Paso in 1970 so that C. Sharp could be head of the Physics Department at UTEP. He worked in that department until retirement. C. Sharp has been very active in the community, including helping start the public television station and working to help improve the nuclear medicine facilities here in El Paso. He also established the C. Sharp Cook Professorship/Chair for Physics at the University of Texas at El Paso. The community will miss him for his generosity. C. Sharp Cook was born in St. Louis Crossing, Indiana on August 18, 1918. He was born to Clarence Conner and Musa Gladys Cook. He went to Hope High School, where he had the privilege of having his father for a teacher. Unfortunately, his father died of cancer two days before Christmas when C. Sharp was a senior in college. C. Sharp went on to complete a Bachelors degree at Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and an MS in Physics at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. His education was interrupted by service in the Army in World War II, where he met and married Marian Norma Waring while stationed in Reno, Nevada. They were blessed with Sherma while he was stationed in Australia and variou islands in the Pacific Theater. He enlisted in September 1942 and was discharged on February 1946 as Captain Cook at Camp Beale, CA. He then completed his Ph.D, in Physics at IU. During his time at IU, Wayne came along. As a career, C. Sharp taught Physics at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He then moved to the San Francisco bay area where he managed various divisions at the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory at Hunters Point, San Francisco, CA. During this time, he worked at several nuclear tests For how to protect people from radiation during a nuclear explosion and fallout. He also helped out with his son's Boy Scout troop, even though he said he had had more than enough camping during WWII in the Army. Following his work with the Navy, he came to UTEP. During his tenure at UTEP, and throughout his reirement, he was an avid UTEP basketball fan. He also spent much of his retirement researching his and his wife's ancestors. His physics training was invaluable in helping him trace back his and Marian's family trees many generations. We will miss his enthusiasm for genealogical research. C. Sharp is a member of Sigma XI, Phi Beta Kappa, American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, and the University Presbyterian Church. We will all miss C. Sharp, Dad/ Nannad (the name his grandsons gave him) /Uncle/Friend) dearly. We appreciate all of your kind thoughts and prayers. If you would like to do something in remembrance of C. Sharp Cook, please do not send flowers. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Cancer Research charity of choice or to the Clarence Sharp Cook Professorship/Chair in Physics at the University of Texas. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place no one else can ever fill.
