STANTON, EVERETT RAY STANTON, 75, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2001. Originally from Harrison County, MO, he was a long time resident of El Paso and a Navy Veteran of WWII. He was awarded the following decoration ribbons: Asiatic Pacific (2 stars) American Theater, Philippine Liberation (1 star) and World War II victory medal. He worked as a welder-mechinist for El Paso Natural Gas Co. until his retirement after 28 years. Ruby was a 1982 graduate of Andress HS. She was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls Assembly #4 and Order of the Eastern Star, Pleiades Chapter # 620. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Yucca Post 8919. Ruby had a heart of gold and everyone that knew her saw a ray of life shining in her. Her life was a miracle and an amazing journey. Although some might say it was a struggle, she lived it to the fullest. Ruby celebrated life and shared her passion with those she met. She touched so many people in many different ways that only those who knew her understood her zest for life and the loss we feel. She was born in Warsaw, Poland on May 28, 1903. She was the adopted child of Sophia and Mauritz Samnik. She and her mother escaped from Poland during World War I. They resettled in Dresden, a cultural and arts center in Germany. As a young woman, Marjanna worked as a legal secretary and had many friends in the creative community. When making arrangements to immigrate to the United States, she met her future husband, Vice Consul Bernard F. Heiler, Sr., and married in 1936. Marjanna became a State Department wife, accompanying her husband in assignments to Dresden, Germany; Winnipeg, Canada; Bremen, Germany; Lima, Peru; and Cd. Juarez, Mexico. Marjanna and Bernard, Sr. retired in El Paso, Texas, in 1958, where Marjanna was well-known among collectors of European antiques. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard F. Heiler, Sr., U.S. Consul, Ret. She is survived by her son, Bernard F. Heiler, Jr., of Middleway, WV and Washington, D.C.; step-grandson, Commander Jerome Reid, USN, of Washington D.C.; grandson Mark L. Saavedra of Providence, RI.; daughter Barbara H. She graduated from Bel Air high school in 1971 and then received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso. Kathy began teaching 3rd grade in 1975 and shortly thereafter fell in love with the library. She opened the Glen Cove Elementary School in 1978 as the school librarian and for the last 23 years has helped thousands of children discover the joys of reading. In 1993 Kathy was voted as the teacher of the year at the school. Daughter of Joe B. and Sibyl M. Volking, she is survived by her husband Alan E. Simpson, sister Kaye V. Barnett and her husband Tom Barnett, niece Liz Ovalle, her husband George Ovalle and their children Sean and Michelle. She is also survived by her aunt Mildred Osborn and her uncle Kenneth Webb and his wife Joy, by her dogs she loved so much Pepper and Bear and also by the thousands of children who blessed her life. She spent her life giving to others and never asking anything in return. We lost her far too soon. He was predeceased by his parents James & Myrtle Abernathy & one sister Ruth Lyle. He graduated high school in Granbury, TX, attended Weatherford College and received his degree from University of Texas in Austin. Throughout his life he was a champion of the disabled, as counselor and later supervisor of the Texas Rehabilitation Commission in El Paso. He volunteered his time with various charities, helping countless handicapped people. A lifelong member of the Methodist Church he served in many capacities and at the time of death was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He was particularly proud of having taught adult Sunday School from the time he was 18 until his illness, first at the Little Methodist Church in Annetta, Texas then at First Methodist Church and Trinity-First United Methodist Church in El Paso. He was active in the Downtown Lion's Club since 1943 and at his death held the longest continuing membership in the club. She married Carlos Escobar, co founder of Escobar Dairy Co. and together formed Carlos Escobar Dairy. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Carlos and grandson Mark Rasor. The last 17 years of her life she lived with her loving and caring daughter Socorro and husband Arthur in Denver, Colorado. He was a graduate of New York Medical College and received his OB/GYN training in El Paso at William Beaumont Hospital. He served in the Army Medical Corps as a Major, was stationed in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Medical Badge. He was in private practice in El Paso from 1969 to 1990. He was on the active staff of several hospitals and served as Chief of the OB/GYN service of Providence Memorial Hospital on several occasions and was Chief of the Medical Staff of Providence Memorial Hospital in 1983. He was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the El Paso County Medical Society. In his retirement years, Dr. Moody was active in the Local International City ACBL Bridge Club 159, and was also active in the Southwest International Personal Computer Club (SWIPCC) serving as Vice President this year 2001. The Boney family moved to El Paso in 1941 and she has been a resident of the City ever since. Jerry attended Dudley Elementary School, El Paso High School, and the University of Texas-El Paso. She taught in the Ysleta Independant School system, retiring in 1988 after 19 years of service. Jerry and Ken were married for 49 years. He belonged to the American Legion Post 110, VFW Post 8729. Hobbies were computer and amateur radio, licensed in 1960 and active in the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Sun City Radio Club and a member of the West Texas Repeater Association in El Paso. He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church. Upon ending his enlistment in 1941 with the Army Air Corp, he found his roll in the war effort working for the Southern Pacific Railroad in El Paso, he retired from the Railroad in 1982 after 40 years of service. He met and married his SSpanish Senorita" Vaudine Hales, in El Paso, Texas. She became his best friend, soul mate and life long companion. Joe moved to El Paso, TX in 1932, and returned to Chicago in 1936 where he met and married Estelle Gordon on August 29, 1940. The couple returned to El Paso, TX in 1945, where they resided until 1970, when they moved to Dallas. Although he was a traveling salesman beginning in 1961, he opened a showroom at The Apparel Mart in Dallas in 1964, which he maintained until his retirement in 1997. He was also a gifted artist. After retiring at the age of 79, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming an accomplished artist by enrolling in Brookhaven College, where he took many art courses and was one of the most popular students there. He often commented that these were the happiest and most fulfilling years of his productive life. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Gussie and Louis Baron, and his brother, David Baron. He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Estelle, and his three sons: Dr. Jason D. Baron of Houston, TX.; Raymond L. Baron and his wife, Ruthie, of Grapevine, TX.; and Kenneth D. Baron of Riverdale, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband William I. Latham, former editor of the El Paso Times. Mrs. Latham was born in Webster Groves, Missouri on July 28, 1914. She moved to El Paso, Texas, in 1923 with her parents Dr. Larkin E. and Lydia M. Stark. She attended El Paso High School and graduated from Radford Academy for Girls in 1933. As an active member of the El Paso community, she served her family, church and city. Some of the positions she held were president of Chapter D, P.E.O.; president of the Coldwell Elementary School's Parent Teacher Association; president and several other offices of the El Paso Woman's Club; and Chairman of Board #39 of the Selective Service Draft Board. A long-time member of First Baptist Church of El Paso for more than 60 years, Mrs. Latham worked as a church receptionist and became the first church visitor on staff. She enjoyed mentoring others through the Women's Missionary Union and as a Sunday School teacher. An exceptional lady and mother, Mrs. Latham was voted "Tri- Hi Y Mother of the Year" in 1961 by the El Paso YMCA. She is the mother of five, grandmother of 11, and great grandmother of 14. Mr. Mason was a very patriotic man who served in three wars. In WWII as a young Marine Al Mason was involved in the liberation of the Philipines. After the war Mr. Mason returned home, but later found the Army and served 31 years. He served a total of 36 years in the military, earning the Meritorious Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, RVN Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Commendation Medal and many more, to numerous to mention. Arrangements by: Sunset Funeral Home-West. Rooker, Charles E. 81, passed away July 6, 2001 in Duncan, Oklahoma following a lengthy illness. He was born in Altus, Oklahoma January 20, 1920. He was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for 31 years, and was also employed by Mortgage Investment of El Paso, Texas. Mr. Rooker lived in the Lower Valley area for 35 years, and was a longtime member of the Ysleta Baptist Church. He was a 32 degree Mason and a 55 year member of the Altus Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Naomi, and two daughters Kathy Crenshaw of Longview, Tx. and Charla Friday of Sanger, Tx., and 3 granddaughters. Services were held in Duncan, Okla. on July 9, 2001. Sierra, Maximo M. 56, passed away on July 11, 2001. He was a resident of El Paso for over 20 years. Mr. Sierra was a 4 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Civil Service Retireee after 33 years of service. Archery group member and a member of the National Riflemans Association. Mr. Sierra is survived by his wife, Genoveva Sierra, son, Maximo Sierra Jr., daughters Patricia Sierra and her husband Robert Wilson, Lucy Floyd and her husband Larry Floyd and Rosie Weeth and her husband Thomas Weeth. Grandchildren, Rene Floyd, Sabina Sierra, Krystal Weeth, Stephanie Weeth and Scott Weeth. Brothers, Ernest Sierra and Dan Sierra, sisters, Esther Duran, Amy Nunez, Ruth Gwaltney, Nina Sierra and Mary Lou Hernandez. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday July 15, 2001 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast located at 4631 Hondo Pass. Rosary will also be at the Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be on Monday, July 16, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Father Hugo will officiate. Interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors.
