ALISTER was born in Winnipeg, Canada on July 3, 1914, where he received his public school education. He received his A.B. degree from Howard College, Birmingham, Alabama, and his M.A. degree from Columbia University Teachers College, New York. He received his theological education at Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Tx., earning the ThM and ThD degrees. He was ordained to the ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination, and was ordained for more than 60 years. He served as a Chaplain in the United States Army with 24 years of service in the Army Reserve, the National Guard and on active duty serving during World War II, Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. He received numerous awards to include the Legion of Merit. He retired from the Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has served several pastorates within the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and served as Voluntary Chaplain with Hospice of El Paso for more than 10 years. Survivors include his wife Margaret, his son William P. Sinclair, daughter-in-law Jean, granddaughter Rosslyn and Mrs. Catherine Day of San Francisco. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home - Carolina. He was a member of the Catholic Church and a retired Detention Officer with the El Paso County Jail. Mr. Gomez served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Wittrock, Ruby Lee Shillings loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at the age of 81. On March 8, 1941 in Houston, Texas she married the love of her life, Howard H. "Gus" Wittrock, 2nd Lt. USAAC. Mrs. Wittrock traveled extensively with her husband while serving his country on active duty. They moved to El Paso in 1970. Throughout her life she was an active participant in bridge clubs, golf, bowling and painting. She was preceded in death by her two sisters and three brothers. CUELLAR, RALPH C. 50, a lifelong resident of El Paso, passed away Thursday May 24, 2001 in New Port Richey, Florida. The former alter-boy, boy scout and cursillista was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Upon graduating from Austin High School in 1968 he attended the University of Texas in El Paso for two years before entering the Army band as a tenor saxophonist. Achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant he retired in 1983 due to a disability he suffered in the military. He was employed by the Texas Workforce Commission helping disabled veterans and later, other individuals with unemployment issues. His father Louis M. Cuellar preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Hannelore Cuellar and his son Michael J. Cuellar, from a previous marriage, mother Remedios Cuellar and brothers Armando, Xavier, and Thomas Cuellar as well as his sister Alma Juarez all of El Paso, Texas. BERGER, MARJORIE F. 86, passed away, Saturday, July 14, 2001 after a brief illness. An El Paso resident since the early 70's she was an active member of the national council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, Temple Mt. Sinai Sisterhood, and The El Paso Holocaust Museum for 30 years she transcribed in braille for the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. She was a volunteer for hospice and active in the arts. She was an accomplished artist in several media and her work is displayed in many collections. She was a member of Coronado Country Club, and an avid golfer well into her 86th year. Mrs. Berger was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised her family in Cleveland, Ohio, and in the early 70's retired with her husband to El Paso where her brother, Jarvis Freiden, and sister, Baylia Blaugrund, were long-time residents. A world traveler with an Adven-turous spirit and a passion for experiencing foreign art and cultures. She visited numerous countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, South and Central America as well as Australia. Mrs. Berger was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Alvin S. Berger, who passed away in El Paso in 1984. She is survived by her son, Bruce Berger, an attorney in Palo Alto, California; daughter, Marilyn Levin, an artist and professor in Boston; her close companion Isadore J. Mama Panchita had a very positive outlook on life, she was extremely loving towards everyone she knew, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She had a wonderful memory even up until her passing. Her favorite hymns, which she sang often, were How Great Thou Art and Because He Lives, and her favorite prayer was Psalm 23. Mama Panchita is survived by her loving family of 12 children, 49 grand- children, 87 great grandchildren and 14 great great grand- children. He graduated from Arkansas A&M College in 1935. After Graduating became a teacher and principal of McGehee High School. During WW II, his National Guard unit, 206th CA{AA} was inducted into the Army of the United States in 1941, was ordered to go to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Uribarri, Luis Alfonso 61 years old, passed away Sunday, 15 July 2001. He was born in Juarez, Chih., Mexico, Nov 18, 1939. He graduated from Cathedral high school in 1955. He earned Bachelors of Science Degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering from Texas Western University in 1962 and 1969 respectively. As an electrical engineer, he was part of the NASA program from 1969 to 1980 at Cape Canaveral, Fla. In 1969, his name was placed on the moon as a part of the APOLLO 11 project. He later became a civil service electrical engineer and worked at FT. Bliss, TX from 1981 until his retirement. A competitive shooter at an early age, he became the first Texas State Metallic Silhouette champion in 1975 and 1976 and the Florida State Metallic Silhouette champion in 1979. Involved in competitive shooting throughout his life, he was a lifetime member of the NRA, Ysleta Gun Club and Arroyo Shooters Club. His most recent and last mission was as the Mt. Cristo Rey Illumination Project Coordinator, where he volunteered his time and effort to help illuminate Mt. Cristo Rey. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Lydia A. Uribarri; his son, Luis Alfonso Uribarri, II; his daughter and son- in-law, Lydia Yvette and Darrell Otto; and his son, Moses Alfonso Uribarri. Born in El Paso, Mr. Levenson was a graduate of El Paso High School and a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico for 27 years. He also served as navigator in the Army Air Corps in World War II. Sam was born in Juarez, Chihuahua, on September 2, 1908, to Isabel Lechuga and Juan Meraz. At the age of six, he immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. His childhood years were spent in El Paso, Texas. Sam married the love of his life, Luz Bustillos, in 1934 and became a self-employed businessman and real estate broker. During his successful career, he owned several small businesses including a fish market and two hardware stores. In his younger years, he was involved in various civic activities such as serving as President of the Lions Club. He was also active in LULAC and the Optomist Club. In addition, he pursued his interest in music by singing publicly at various functions in the El Paso and Juarez areas. Music was Sam's passion and gift. He taught himself how to play the piano and to sing all types of music. However, he most enjoyed singing opera and listening to famous opera singers. His children would wake in the morning to hear their father singing pieces from the likes of Mario Lanzo and Caruso. He attended Jesus Chapel East for many years. Sam will be forever remembered by his family for his adventuresome spirit and positive outlook on life. He never let adversity stand in the way of the goals he set - he forged ahead no matter how difficult circumstances became. Hard work and integrity were qualities he valued. Business associates knew they could depend on his handshake, his family knew they could depend on his word. He combined all of these wonderful traits with a keen intellect and sharp wit. His family and friends enjoyed hearing his melodious laughter. Above all, he loved his family deeply and demonstrated that love on a daily basis. Sam will be sorely missed by all of those who loved him. His family thanks God for his long, full, happy and healthy life. BORSBERRY, MARTIN DAVIS 84, of El Paso, Texas passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at his home. He was born in Mesilla, New Mexico on May 31, 1917 to Samuel Ethylbert and Della May Davis Borsberry. Mr. Borsberry served his country honorably as a Technical Sergeant in the combat engineers of the United States Army from January 1941 to December 2, 1945 in WWII. He served in the Alutions and South Pacific. Following the war, Mr. Borsberry joined the Masonic Order in the 1950's and is a member of the Fraternity Lodge #1111 in El Paso. Mr. Borsberry joined his brother, working as a foreman for Borsberry Construction Company where he faithfully remained until his retirement. He is survived by one brother, Sam E. Borsberry of El Paso; eight nieces and three nephews, many great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters. They moved to El Paso where they spent most of their lives; became members of Asbury Methodist Church. Marilouise worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Company and retired from Mountain Bell. She became a proud Charter Member of the David G. Burnet Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She had an important ancestor, Elijah Stapp, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence of Texas. She also wrote a book about her ancestors. The book was presented to the Alamo Library in San Antonio, Texas. SHAPIRO, WILLIAM M. passed away at his home, Saturday evening, July 21, 2001 after a long illness. Born in 1913 in Brooklyn, New York, to Issac and Pauline Shapiro, his family moved to Boston, Mass. where he grew up. While working as Assistant Head Librarian at the Boston Public Library, he also opened and operated a specialty book and record store. He had a lifelong love for books and learning and a passion for music. As a veteran of World War II, he received a commendation from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1944 he brought his family to El Paso and founded the Turntable, one of the first record stores in the state of Texas. Later he founded Sunland Supply Co., Inc. and the Harmony Shop Music Stores. During his 57 years in El Paso, he was involved in public service, B'nai B'rith Anti Defamation League, the Jewish Federation of El Paso, Score, and served as one of the founders of the Vincent M. Ravel collection of Judaica at the UTEP Library. He is survived by his beloved wife, Annette K. Shapiro; sons, Lawrence of Indianapolis, Jeremiah, and Jonathan of El Paso; adoring grandchildren, Rebecca Shapiro, Mindy Shapiro, Jennifer Piurek, Laura Nelson, Brian Shapiro, Ysa Savage, and Madeline Jabbora; five great grandchildren; step children, Rita Carroll, Benita Neumann, and Elise Ravel.
