Born in Indianapolis, Indiana and moved to El Paso where he worked and retired as a Santa Fe Railroad Engineer. He was also a member of the El Maida Shriners. Survived by his wife, Eleanor Lytle Applewhite and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 9, at 3 P.M. at the Regency Assisted Living Center, 221 Bartlett. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the El Maida Shrine Burn Hospital. Baker, Mrs. Wylie Lee Rhinehart went from labor to reward on Sunday, August 5, 2001. Wylie was born October 28, 1921, in Waxahatchie, TX to Wiley and Edna Rhinehart. She later moved to El Paso where she met amd married Willie James Baker, Sr. Mrs. Baker was employed for several years at the El Paso Natural Gas Company. Preceded in death by Willie James Baker, Jr. Wylie Lee united with Visitors Chapel AME Church in the late 1940's where she was an active stewardess. She cared for and visited the sick and shut in until her health began to decline. Wylie Lee is survived by her daughter Sheila Baker Johnson (Michael) of Denver, CO, and her son Larry Baker of El Paso, TX. A 42-year resident of El Paso, he served two years in the United States Army in Germany. Born in Silver City, New Mexico, he graduated from Hurly High School in 1952 and attended the University of Arizona in Tucson. He worked for the Silver City Daily Press, then as a safety supervisor with American Garment and later retired from the fire department after 23 years. MALONE, JAMES passed away Monday, August 6, 2001 at his home in El Paso, TX. Jim, a long time resident, lettered three years in football and basketball at Austin High School and two years at Texas College of Mines (now UTEP) before concluding his active playing career at the University of New Mexico. There he played for the Lobos in the 1946 Sunbowl. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Degree in Business Administration, after serving as an officer in the Army during WW II. Jim was a valued member of the Western Athletic Conference Officiating Staff from 1952-1978 and then remained active in sports at UTEP. He was later inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim also served as chairman of the Civil Service Commission in the 1960's. He retired as Executive Vice President with the El Paso Natural Gas Company after more than 35 years of service. He was an avid golfer, a member of the El Paso Country Club, and also enjoyed traveling with his wife Lolli. Jim will be remembered as being a true gentleman and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father James Polk Malone, mother Vivian Isabel O'Neil, step-father Edwin O'Neil, and sister Lois Stradley. She spent her childhood in Boulder, Co and after graduating from Boulder H.S., attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Denver, where she earned her R.N. certification. Mary Jane enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp as a 1st Lieutenent during WWII. After discharge, she finished her education in Ft. Collins, Co. where she met her husband Jim, who preceeded her in death. While they resided in El Paso, from 1970-1988, Mary Jane worked for the El Paso School District as an instructor for nurse aids and orderlies She was a volunteer for Meals-on- Wheels, Readers for the Blind, Habitat for Humanity and the Bethany Christian Church Thrift Store. In 1982, she received the ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD by the El Paso Business and Professional Women and, in May 1986, she received the prestigious SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR award by the Small Business Administration. She was listed in the WHO'S WHO OF AMERICAN WOMEN, MARQUIS Edition, as well as the WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD, MARQUIS Edition. She was a member of the Board of Governors of the American Biographical Institute Research Association, the National Association for Female Executives and the National Association for Home Care. Prior to retiring, she contracted with a company in Tokyo, Japan to establish the SARA CARE services throughout Japan. Sara was an avid gardener prior to her professional career and gardened again after her retirement. He was the father of Paul Eftis of Lakeridge, Virginia and Victoria Turressi of Falls Church, Virginia. He is survived by 5 grandchildren. Dr. Eftis was employed at the University of Texas as a researcher/professor in the department of Aerospace Science and Technology. He worked there from 1996 to the present. He was a graduate of City College of New York and held a M.S. in Civil Engineering from Columbia University. He earned his Doctorate of Science at George Washington University from which he was a Professor Emeritus. He was a professor at George Washington University for approximately 35 years. He had many published articles in his fields of Engineering Impact science and had earned several important research grants for the university. He was highly distinguished in his field. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 12, 1916, baptized at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Raymond was a graduate of St. Michael's Academy in Hopewell, New Jersey and Taylor College in Philadelphia. Raymond resided in Vineland, NJ during his youth before returning to Philadelphia. In May 1942, Raymond enlisted and served with distinction in the U.S. Army's 43rd Infantry Division Winged Victory from May 1942 to June 1945. Duty included serving in the American Theater, Pacific Theater and Arrowhead Landing Assault. His service was recognized with the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Two Battle Stars. He was a T4 SGT with the 743rd Ordnance Company which landed at Guadacanal, New Caldonia, Tulege, Russell Islands, Rendova, New Georgia and Arundell and returned to the states aboard a hospital ship. His Family, church and veterans affairs were his pride and joy. On June 30, 1946 in Philadelphia, Raymond married and began his 55 year marriage to his beloved wife, Louise Mimi Hoffman. They raised a family of five children, eight grandchildren and numerous dogs and cats. He moved to El Paso in 1948 to work with a CPA Firm and retired from the El Paso Natural Gas Co. in 1983 after 27 years of service. He later maintained a private tax practice until his death. Raymond contributed greatly to El Paso in many community works serving church, school and veterans organizations. While at St. Joseph's Catholic Church he chaired the annual bazaar for 20 years, managed the campaign to install the stained glass window above the Church choir loft and actively supported other activities to raise money for the church and school. He was a charter member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1882, Past President of St. Joseph's Holy Name Society, Life Member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #36, Life Member of Borderland Chapter #10 Disabled American Veterans, 1987-88 Commander of the DAV Department of Texas and served as DAV Treasurer until his illness. He was also a life member of VFW Post 5615, Past President of Roncalli Club and member of the UTEP Evening Touchdown Club. He was avid Miner fan for decades and followed the team to numerous out of town games. He also never forgot his Philadelphia roots and cheered for his Philadelphia Phillies & Eagles and his beloved Notre Dame "Fightig Irish". Retirement for Raymond meant doing his tax work, traveling with his children and grandchildren, attending reunions with the 43rd Division and volunteering at the El Paso VA clinic. A fifth generation Texan, she was born in Harrisburg (Houston), a descendant of Ben Milam, hero of the Battle of San Antonio, "who will follow old Ben Milam," daughter of Terah Haggin Patterson and Leila Roberta Milam. She authored two books Once Upon a Morning: Seven decades of versification and Hot Biscuits and Sorghum Molasses, a biography and family history. She homesteaded in New Mexico with her family and later rode the interurban from Ysleta to El Paso High School where she was a member of the first May class to graduate (1917) from EPHS's present site. She headed the Records Department of the El Paso Depot of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, attended Pomona College in Claremont, CA where she was assistant editor of Student Life and worked as a legal secretary in El Paso before marrying the late John I. Peterson. She was secretary to the El Paso Council of P.T.A., a member of Writer's Workshop of El Paso Women's club, American Association of the Chamber of Commerce, El Paso County Historical Society and a life member of El Paso Opti-Mrs. Club and Woman's Auxiliary to the University of Texas at El Paso. Peterson's poetry - or light verse as she referred to it - appeared in the El Paso Times, El Paso Herald Post, Southwestern Clubwoman and the literary magazine Scribbler (Pomona College), and El Paso High School Tatler. She also wrote for one of the earliest editions of the Prospector, student newspaper of the Texas School of Miners (now UTEP). She volunteered as a receptionist at El Paso Centennial Museum. She was a contributor to El Paso County Historical Society Password where she won the Eugene O. Porter Memorial Award. She was one of the top proofreaders for Mangan Books, a book publisher and a member of Coronado Christian Church. Her sister Rosa Patterson Oliver and husband Robert survive her. HARNDEN, KATHERINE W. 82, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001 in El Paso, Texas. She was born July 13, 1919 on a farm near Concordia, Kansas to Samuel W. Winteroth and Lizzie (Buss) Winteroth. After graduating from Concordia High School in 1939, she worked during World War II in Washington DC for the federal government. On November 11, 1944 she married Richard W. Harnden who was serving in the Army. During his military service they lived in many places including two years in Argentina. They retired in El Paso, Texas. She was an active member of St. Clements Episcopal Church and enjoyed collecting cookbooks, cooking, reading, walking and playing cards. She was preceded In death by her husband, Richard in 1978 and her parents, Lizzie and Samuel Winteroth. SMITH, MARY PAULINE age 81, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 in El Paso. Mary Pauline was born November 14, 1919, in Fargo, North Dakota, to the late Jessie Kenyon and Louis Bohn. She attended Fargo High School and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1941. After her graduation Mary Pauline worked as a home economics, science and music teacher in several towns in Minnesota and North and South Dakota. Later Mary Pauline worked as Manager of a bridal shop in Fargo. On June 22, 1954, she was united in marriage to Franklin Glenn Smith, a National Park Service Naturalist, at Grand Canyon, AZ. Mary Pauline and Frank lived at the Grand Canyon for their first months of marriage. After that they lived in Washington, D.C., Carlsbad Caverns, Santa Fe, NM, Ft. Davis, TX, and El Paso. Mary Pauline shared her husband's love of the National Parks and was a recognized presence beside her husband during his tenure as Superintendent of Chamizal National Memorial for almost 30 years. Mary Pauline was a member of the American Association of University Women, serving as President 1964-65 and, more recently as Corresponding/Courtesy Secretary. She was also a member of the El Paso Variedades, and Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Mary Pauline was also a member of the Sweet Adelines from 1975-1984. On August 6, 2001 she went to sleep and woke up in the arms of her Lord. She previously lived in New York City, where she worked on a Ph.D degree in Literature. She was a prolific writer of short stories and a lover of literature and arts. She was preceded in death by her precious brother, John Milton, and is survived by her parents Woodrow L. and Leonie Wilson, her brother Stephen, Timothy, Phillip and Daniel and her sisters Priscilla Harmon and Paula Koehler, 4 nephews and nieces, uncles, aunts and several cousins.
