Moreno, Manuel F. 84, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2001 in a local hospital. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Moreno had been employed with the Civil Service as a Transportation Supervisor for 33 years. He joined the C.C. Camp and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II. He was decorated with EAME Campaign Medal with four bronze stars. Mr. Moreno was preceded in death by his wife Felipa H. Moreno. He is survived by his sons, Lucio H. Moreno and Roberto Moreno. Although residing in El Paso since 1933, he was born in Valetine, Texas on March 7, 1912. While we deeply mourn his passing, his entire family takes great pride and honor in having had such a hardworking and fine father, and a loving supportive grandfather. His legacy and example will long endure in the coming generations he created. Sr. Villalva worked for Union Pacific Railroad in El Paso, prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army in February 1944, during WW2. Trained as an infantry rifleman, he was shipped overseas to Italy in May 1944 and assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 351st Infantry Regiment, of the 88th Infantry Division. He joind this proud 'Blue Devil' Division just prior to being one of the first US troops to enter and liberate Rome. During his combat tour of duty from May 1944 to May 1945 he saw heavy action, valiantly fighting in three major campaign battles, and was wounded multiple times. For his proud and distinguished combat service he was awarded many decorations, including the coveted Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Europe Theater of Operations Campaign Medal (with three Campaign Stars), and the French Croix De Guerre Medal. Following the war, Sr. Villalva went to work for the Keebler Company, from which he eventually retired. He remained very active in the community in the following years, leading the local Alborada Social Club for many years, and acting as coordinator of senior adult activities at the Central YMCA and the local chapter of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program organization. He was also a proud member of his local Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Sr. Villalva is survived by a large and loving family, including his wife of 68 years, Elisa M. Villalva, and his four children: George Villalva Jr., Norma Rosta, Rogelio Villalva, and Jaime Villalva. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Philip 81, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2001. Dr. Richardson was a WWII United States Army Veteran serving as a paratrooper. After proudly serving his country, he attended Temple University and became an Orthopedic Surgeon. He then re-enlisted in the United States Army and served a total of 16 years. Dr. Richardson was survived by his wife, Alicia Richardson, sons Scott, David and Jim, daughters Wendy and Cindy, brother-in-law and his wife Mr. and Mrs. Robert Salazar, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was Professor Emeritus and taught Physics at UTEP for 43 yrs. His scientific work embraced many fields ranging from medicine to geophysics. He was the author of 5 scientific books and his last, Science and Biblical Faith, was his favorite. For 12 years he was director of Schellenger Research Laboratories, which established a high reputation in atmospheric physics, rocketry, and acoustics. He was a consultant and researcher for Duke University, Navy Electronics Laboratory, U.S. Army Research Office, and Globe Universal Sciences. His original research led to patents on electronic sound ranging devices, such as the Dodar (the predecessor to Sonar), directional microphones, magnetic sensing devices, electro-chemical extraction devices, and seismic energy devices. He also jointly worked on the vector cardiograph, which was to be the first three-dimensional computer display to study the heart. Because of his deep Christian faith, he was a deacon for many years at First Baptist Church and the president of the Creation Research Society for 4 years. He is survived by Libby, his wife of 62 years, and four children; Mary Kay D'Arcy, Betty Blackmond, Tom Barnes, Dottie Vinall, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. October 28 2001 Return to top Ratner Mr. Alfred A. passed away early on October 26 2001 following a long battle with cerebrovascular disease and prostate cancer. Born in Chicago in 1913, Mr. Ratner first came to El Paso in 1935 and began work at the old White House Department Stores, becoming manager of the Franklin Stores in 1937. He married Adalaide Moye in 1940 and raised three children in El Paso. Mr. Ratner retired and sold his interest in the Southwest Beauty Schools in 1983. He was always an active member of the El Paso civic community, serving on the Board of Directors for the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, as Chairman of the El Paso City-County Board of Health, President of the Temple Mt. Sinai Men's Club, and member of the Lion's Club. Professionally, he served as President of the National Association of Cosmetology Schools and Chairman of the Cosmetology Accrediting Commission of the U.S. Department of Education. In retirement, he volunteered at the Small Business Administration as a SCORE counselor, becoming Chairman of SCORE for a time. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Adalaide M. Ratner, and three married children: Linda (and Richard) Bateman of Breckenridge Colorado, James (and Janice) Ratner of Amherst Massachusetts and Robert (and Nan) Ratner of Bethesda Maryland. He had an extensive and highly decorated military career beginning with his service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He spent twenty-four years as an aviator in the U.S. Army, during which time he served in the Vietnam War. He retired from the military in 1982 to become a Quality Control Manager at M & Q Plastic products. Ed was an intelligent, loving, and compassionate man who dedicated his life to his beloved family. Drovdahl Randell Larry died Friday afternoon October 26, 2001 at the age of 86. He was born in Granview, Montana on August 11, 1915. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. From September 1945 to October 1950, he worked at Watson Labs in Eatontown, New Jersey as an electronic engineer working with radar. From October 1950 through September 1960, he worked for Gilfillan Bros., Los Angeles firm, as a field engineer with radar and communication equipment. From September 1960 through September 1974, he worked at White Sands Missile Range as an electronic missile engineer, physical scientist GS13-step 8. He retired from White Sands in 1974. During his retirement, he enjoyed playing with the Silvertones band at Memorial Senior Center. He was a resident of El Paso for 41 years. He was preceded in death by his wives, Myrtle Reinhard Drovdahl and Marjorie Sims Drovdahl. His wife, Beatrice Gottlieb passed away in 1982. In addition to his children, he is survived by his 5 grandchildren, Darren Starr of Menlo Park, California, Sander Starr of El Paso, Texas and Dr. Ken Starr of Eugene, Oregon. He practiced dentistry in Hempstead, New York for 35 years and was distinguished in his field. After he moved to El Paso he decided to return to school and get a B.S. degree. Always a serious student, he attended UTEP while in his 70's and earned a degree in anthropology. He was born in San Diego, De Los Banos, Cuba. He grew up in El Paso, Texas and graduated from High School and entered the U.S. Air Force there. PENA, OFELIA ALVAREZ wife of the late, Juan Pena and beloved mother of ten, died at home on October 28, 2001. A lifelong resident of El Paso, she was a 1933 Bowie High School graduate. After graduation, she applied her award-winning typing skills and her love of books to work as a proofreader at La Revista, a Catholic printing company. In 1937 she married, and together they founded Aztec Importers, an international boot and leather goods company. She was a gentle woman of extraordinary strength and courage, rearing and nurturing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren through this nation's wars and the uncertainties of the border economy. She was also mentor and role model for her own friends, as well as those of each generation that followed. Because of her warmth and caring manner, her many descendants will forever have wonderful memories of "Gama", "Mamacita" and "Little Grama" as she was known to them. Mrs. Pena was an active member of the Catholic Church and her faith guided her every action. She will be dearly missed, but all are comforted by the strength, happiness and unselfish love that she so freely gave. She is predeceased also by her son, Ernest and leaves, Col. A. He had lived in El Paso for 34 years. He was retired from the United States Army having served in Korea during the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. MANITO, MANUEL ISMAEL DAVILA was born in Chih., Mexico on Nov. 8, 1900. He lived and witnessed a century of world history. He survived many hardships and overcame many obstacles. On October 28, 2001, the Lord called him to his side. Manuel is survived by his loving wife, Carolina Solis Davila. They were married for 76 years. They had 12 children, sons: Manuel I. Davila, Jr., Mario Davila, Armando Davila, and Ramon Torres. Daughters: Maria E. Hernandez, Consuelo Pina, Rosario Richardson, Irene Resendez and Hilda Davila. They have 18 grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Manuel immigrated to the United States September of 1937. He had no knowledge of the language but that did not stop him. He quickly found employment and his employers valued his hard work ethic. He worked as a truck driver for many years. He was also a boxer because of his love for the sport and nicknamed "Manito" because of his huge hands. Manuel retired at the age of 74 and for the next 17 years he freely gave of his time and devotion to the Lord and the holy nuns of the Monastery of Perpetual Adoration. Manuel Davila was a loving husband, a devoted father and doting grandfather. We were gifted with his warm hugs, gentle smile, his wisdom and his humorous personality. The family would like to thank his doctors: Dr. Jose Silva, Dr. Galo Rodarte, Dr. Manuel L. Acosta, Dr. Eugenio Armendariz and the staff at Providence Memorial Hospital for their constant care and compassion. He served in World War II as a pilot, and later retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve after reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander Ret. Mr. Rhys was employed by and retired from Shell Oil Company. After his retirement from Shell, Mr. Rees later worked for and retired from the Texas Department of Water Resources.
