A resident of El Paso since 1981, Thelma was a retired grocery store owner in Boise, Idaho. She founded the Everett and Thelma Morris Endowment Fund at UTEP and was appointed by Senator Bob Dole to raise money in the El Paso area for the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Everett F. Morris, brother Robert W. Lee, and sister Alyce Marlin. Thelma requested no funeral or memorial services. MARQUEZ, DAVID CANDELARIA 87, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2002 in a rehabilitation center in El Paso. Longtime resident of San Elizario, Texas, and a member of the Catholic Church. Formerly of Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a union painter for an outdoors advertising firm. Decorated and disabled veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country as an infantry sergeant in Guadalcanal and the Philippine Islands during World War II. Preceded in death by his parents Jose Antonio Marquez and Concepcion Candelaria Marquez, his brothers Tiburcio Marquez, Juan Marquez and Patricio Marquez, his grand-nephew Ben Marquez, and most recently his wife of 41 years, Beatriz Marquez, in May 2001. Survived by his sister-in-law Daisy Marquez of El Paso, his niece Sandra Marquez of Whittier, California, and his nephews Dr. Tony Marquez (Maria) of El Paso, Carlos Marquez (Teresa) of El Paso, David Marquez (Mary) of Baytown, Texas, and Dr. Ricardo Marquez of El Paso. Also survived by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Rosary services were held at Martin Funeral Home East on January 3 and burial with military honors was held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery on January 4. Donations in his memory may be made to San Elizario Catholic Church. Bombach, Rogelio 78, was granted eternal rest with Our Lord on Friday, January 4, 2002. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and attended El Paso High School. A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Army with the 779th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in Hawaii and Okinawa as a sharpshooter and machine gunner in charge of a 50-caliber machine gun crew, and later as a military policeman in occupied Korea. Upon returning from the war, he became a structural ironworker with R.E. McKee and later worked for the City of El Paso as a construction inspector and was the CETA General Superintendent. He was involved in numerous major construction projects in the city, including the Asarco Smelter, El Paso National Bank Building and the Sun Bowl. Additionally, he worked for the International Boundary and Water Commission on the Chamizal Project. He is preceded in death by his beloved brothers, Carlos and Jose Bombach and is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maria Teresa Bombach; sons, Roger Jr., M.D. of Oklahoma, Thomas and Mark, both of El Paso and Patrick of California; daughters, Patricia Ewalt of Missouri, Theresa Riddall of El Paso and Barbara Holleman of Tennessee; and 10 grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and will be greatly missed by everyone. CAVENDISH, MARVIN 55, passed away January 5, 2002 in El Paso. He was a resident of El Paso for 40 years. Mr. Cavendish was a Navy Veteran and served in the Vietnam Conflict. In 1994 the Army stationed him at Fort Bliss. He is survived by his wife Michelle Hayden and daughter Cellaya Sara Hayden; his brothers James Timothy Hayden, James Rodney Hayden and James Kent Hayden; and many other friends and family. Services were entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West. SALOME, JAMES SR. passed away Sunday, January 6, 2002. He was born in Lincoln, New Mexico and moved to El Paso in 1925. He was promoted to store manager by Federal Clothing Store Chain at the early age of 21. In 1935 he married Elsie Abraham also from a prominent, pioneer El Paso family. He, along with his brother Homer, Started Builders Supply Inc. and in 1950 they built the first shopping center in El Paso, the Lakeside Shopping Center. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was involved in many real estate investments throughout the city. He is survived by his loving wife Elsie, one sister orraine Kallail, three sons James Salome Jr., Norman Salome and Dr. Roger Salome, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. DUKE, JACK N. 84, passed away Friday, January 4, 2002 at his home. He was born in Dallas to Joseph and Vida Duke and grew up in El Paso. After graduation from the College of Mines and Metallurgy in 1938, he served as an Investigator for the U.S. Treasury Department and during World War II was in the Military Police attached to the 14th Air Force at General Claire Chennault's headquarters. Upon returning to El Paso he was employed as a Supervisory Inspector with the U.S. Customs Service until his retirement. She taught music at Ranchland Hills, Scottsdale, and Edgemere Elementary Schools. She served with the American Red Cross as a recreational and social worker during WW II at the Mayo General Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. Survivors include her husband, Jack O. He was a founding member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. "Gil" served as a Secular Franciscan and was a past scoutmaster for Our Lady of Guadalupe Boy Scouts. He served in WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart with Cluster. He was a founding member of VFW Post #8919, Military Order of Purple Heart #393 and also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #10. He retired after 29 years of civil service at Ft. PAGELER, WALTER F. 93, a missionary, died Monday, January 7, 2002 in North Charleston, S.C. Former resident of El Paso, Texas for 50 years. Member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Born on February 22, 1913, Mr. Pinon was a longtime resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Pinon served in the U.S. Army and was a decorated World War II veteran. Mr. Pinon retired as a welder from Southern Pacific railroad after 38 years and will be remembered as a man with integrity, high ideals, a strong work ethic, and an undying love for his family. Stahl Barbara Elizabeth "Betty" Betty has assumed her official role as an angel in heaven after 85 years of practice here on earth, where her signature was her thousand-watt smile and sweet nature. She loved all people and thoroughly enjoyed life! Betty passed away peacefully in Houston on January 4, 2002. She is survived by her beloved husband, Judson H. Stahl; daughter, Barbie Adams, her husband David McKenney and grandson Michael of Houston; son, Judson L. Born in El Reno, OK, Betty graduated from the University of Oklahoma where she was a Delta Gamma. Betty enjoyed a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher in El Paso, and was past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, and held offices in the Retired Teachers' Association, AAUW, and the El Paso Woman's Club, serving as past president of the Book Club. She sang in the chorus and quartet with the Sweet Adeline's. Heartfelt thanks go to Betty's El Paso physician, Dr. Harry E. Davis, II for years of ultimate doctoring and treasured friendship, and to her care-giver, Martha Lozoya. He was born July 31, 1924 and had lived in El Paso for the past 31 years. Tom was a patriot and served his country for many years, retiring from the United States Army in the early 1970's. After his retirement, he worked for Union Fashion for several years as their chief of security. He was also active in the AARP, American Society for Industrial Security, El Paso Chamber of Commerce (where he served on their Loss Prevention Committee), El Paso Merchants' Association and the BPOE. Tom leaves a daughter Vicky Boyd Pendell (David); a son Robert Earl and a grandson Thomas Michael Taylor. He also leaves long-term friend and caregiver Dora Murillo. BOUGHNER, MAJOR DUNCAN S. retired Army, 85 passed away January 2, 2002 of complications due to cancer. He was born November 28, 1916 in Weston, West Virginia. Graduated from Salem College in 1938 with a BS. During the depression, he and a friend after graduating from college traveled and worked their way around the world. He later worked for the city of Canisteo, NY, as a surveyor and for the Erie Railroad as a trucker. In February 1941 he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the costal artillery unit in Hawaii. He was at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor on Sunday December 7, 1941, for a planned basketball game with some Navy friends after breakfast. The Japanese attack during breakfast changed all of that. One of the Navy sailors was an armorer and knew where some. 30 caliber machine guns were stored. Duncan with five sailors took the three machine guns and fired at the attacking planes until the ammo was exhausted and the attack ended. He and others rescued sailors from the water, oil and debris from ships that were sunk or damaged near Ford Island. After OCS, in August 1942 he was on a convoy of 28 ships headed for Iceland, only 5 ships survived the erman U-boat attacks. He was stationed in Iceland for a year before continuing by convoy to Scotland. After more training his units next assignment was in the anti-aircraft defense of London where he met his future wife, Emily Mary Read (nicknamed Topsy). She was a British Captain who commanded an anti-aircraft battery near London. He landed at Omaha beach in Normandy on D-day plus two. Next he and his sergeant were assigned to clear over 2000 mines at the harbor of Cherbourg, France. Further wartime assignments included Paris, Brussels, the Battle-of-the-Bulge and the defense of Antwerp from German rockets. At war's end he was in Holly, Germany to dismante German artillery. He then married Topsy July 9, 1945 and had two children John and Susan. Duncan had a 20-year career with the Army, which ended with his last assignment as an ROTC Instructor at Texas Western College (UTEP). During his military career he went thru El Paso and was stationed here 6 times and decided to stay. In 1961 he received a Masters in Education. He began his 22-year teaching career, primarily in math, which included Ysleta High 1963-84 and Hanks in 1985. He retired from teaching due to cancer. Next he chose to be a Red Cross volunteer in the Urology Depart-ment at William Beaumont Hospital for 12 years. He and Topsy were actively involved in: golf at the Horizon Golf course and elsewhere, bridge groups and supported many of the activities of the All Saints Episcopal Church. Topsy preceded him in death in January 2001. His memorial service will be at All Saints Episcopal Church at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2002. Teodoro Hernandez, 77, passed away on January 8, 2002. Mr. Hernandez was born in Glorieta, Dgo, Mexico and resided in El Paso for 34 years. He was retired from Sunland Park Racetrack after 30 years. POWELL, EDD 80, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2002. He had lived in El Paso since December, 1947. He and his wife, Ethel, opened a small grocery store in what was then known as, Ysleta. His store grew into what is now the largest chain of super markets in El Paso, known as "Big 8". Edd was born in Bond, Kentucky on August 31, 1921 to Lula and Roscoe Powell. His mother passed away in 1929. Roscoe later married Suzie Pennington whose family was in the grocery business in Silver City, New Mexico. In 1937, Edd and his family moved to Deming, New Mexico and opened a grocery store. Edd met Ethel Victoria Hurt in Deming and they were married in 1941. They were married almost 59 years when she passed away in March of 2000. Mr. Powell is preceded in death by his father Roscoe, a brother Morgan, and sisters Ann Southern and Maud Marcum Brown, and one nephew, David Marcum.
