Virginia St., El Paso, Texas 79901 915-532-1856 January 20 2001 Return to top Flagg, Ann (Brister), age 77, joined her husband in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ on January 4, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Edward (Sarge) Flagg; her parents, Thomas Percival and Sarah Mary Ann "Polly" Brister (Watson); her sisters Doris Layne and Ruby Hildebrand; her brothers Wade Brister and Raymond Brister who died young. Ann was born on February 17, 1924 in Palo Alto, California and was the youngest of five child-ren. At that time, Middlefield Road was out in the country, far from the big city. When she was 14, both of Ann's parents died within a year of each other and she had to move to Oakland to live with her sister, Ruby. Streetcars and traffic were startling to this young country girl. Her early losses contributed to Ann's deep commitment to staying in contact with her extended family. During World War II, patriotism was high and Ann stepped out of the traditional roles when she took over a postal route so that the mailman could volunteer to serve his country in the war. It was near the end of the war when she met a handsome young sailor from Idaho named Ed Flagg. They married on September 9, 1945 in the United Brethren church in Oakland, California. Their only child, Maryann Elizabeth, was born in 1949 in the Santa Clara County Hospital, the very same hospital where Ann was born 25 years earlier. Later, when Ed joined the Army, Ann followed him all over the world. They were stationed in post-war Germany and in Alaska before it became a state. Like many who serve in the military, Ann and Ed's love for their country was evident all through their lives. In 1958, the family was transferred from Alaska to Ft. Bliss. They attended the Salvation Army Citadel Corps (church) while it was still on Stanton Street. Ann joined the Home League where she began the lifelong friendships that meant so much to her. In 1969, Ed retired from what he called the "fighting Army" to join the "loving Army" as Salvation Army missionaries in Alaska. During this time, they were adopted by the Chilkat Tlingit, an Indian tribe who shared their deep faith in God. Ed became an Eagle, Ann a Raven. In 1981, they settled into full-time retirement in El Paso. They both had very tender hearts and took seriously the Salvation Army's slogan of "Heart to God, Hand to Man". Ed and Ann were members of the Central Lion's club for many years, actively involved in a variety of service projects. Volunteering with the camp for disabled children in Kerrville, Texas touched Ann deeply and she spoke of it often. When Ed longed to visit Alaska on last time, it was Ann, at age 70, who drove him there in 1994. They were on their way to Anchorage when Ed died suddenly. He is buried in Haines, next to the chief who called him son. Ann shared her faith with many others over the years through Christian Women's Club luncheons, Women's Aglow Fellowship, Jesus Chapel's Grace Group, and the Walk to Emmaus. Her easy laugh was infec-tious and people found themselves laughing with her even when they didn't know why. Ann is survived by her daughter Maryann White (Flagg); her son-in-law, Richard White; her grandchildren, Jeff Ditmer (Denise) of California, Michelle Ditmer of El Paso, and Eddie White of El Paso; and great-grandchildren Jeffrey Jr., Jessica, Jonathan, and Cody. She also leaves wonderful memories with her many friends. Ann will be buried with her husband in Alaska. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Central Lions Club. Memorial Services will be held at Jesus Chapel East, 10555 Edgemere, on Sunday, January 27, 2002 at 3 p.m. Captains Clay and Pam Gardner of the Salvation Army Citadel Corps and Pastor Buster Russell of Jesus Chapel will officiate. Funeral arrange-ments entrusted to La Paz Funeral Home. JANUARY 15 - Something very sad happened today, it's not the first time we felt this way. I wanted to cry but instead asked why, this blue-eyed baby had to die. Perhaps their time seemed all too brief, don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Not the first time. How can this be true? One in 1955, the other in 2002.
