CERDA, PASTOR MANDEL DE LA 52, was called home by our Lord on Monday, February 25, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he was a long‑time resident and Pastor of "Iglesia Internacional de Jesus". Pastor Manuel is survived by his wife, Alma Elizabeth De La Cerda, son, Cliff Allen, daughters, Sylvia Magdaleno, Isabel Hernandez, Maribel Davis, Yvette Maiella, Yanina Taylor and 10 Grandchildren. At an early age, Mr. Maasdorf immigrated to the United States from Germany with his family. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Joe was an avid fisherman in his free time and was an Operations Manager of Delphi Automotive Systems since 1968. He was preceded in death by his parents Otto Paul and Friedel Chris Maasdorf. GUTHRIE, JESSIE LOU "JAY" ALSTON 86, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2002. She taught in the Snyder public schools for 13 years and was a resident of El Paso for the past ten years. She spent her childhood in Sweetwater, Texas, was a graduate of Texas Tech University, and lived in Fort Worth for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.F. "Tobe" Guthrie and by four brothers and sisters. She was born in Deming, New Mexico and was a lifelong resident of El Paso, Texas. She was a beloved principal and friend to all who knew her. Mrs. Bond is survived by her loving husband, James Thomas Bond; her daughters Amy Yvonne Bond Pressley and husband Shaun, Jennifer Michelle Bond Mata and husband Israel; her two precious grandsons, Tyler James Pressley and Kyle Shaun Pressley; her parents John Bill and Colleen D. She was employed with the El Paso Independent School District She taught elementary and secondary education, was a Teacher Certification Officer, Assistant Principal of Whitaker Elementary, Principal of Beall Elementary and most recently, the Principal of Lindbergh Elementary School. Our mother, Carmen Contreras Pena died on January 31, 2002 with her family at her beside at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born on July 27, 1925 in El Paso, Texas, the only child of Ernestina Balvier and Fructuoso (Frank) Contreras. She was a loving, devoted daughter and mother. Carmen raised her family in Gardena, CA. She moved to San Jose, CA in the 1970's to be near her wandering children and retired in the 1980's to travel and visit friends and family. Her moves to Albuquerque, NM and finally Kansas City, MO were necessitated by her illness. Not one to let her polio stop her she persevered and always worked to provide a loving environment for her family. Her independent nature, curiosity, strong work ethic, patriotism and love of education were passed on to her children and grandchildren. Carmen is survived by her son Ramon and daughter-in-law Kathleen Collins Pena of San Jose, CA; daughter Evangeline (Vangie) and son-in-law John Rich, of Kansas City, MO; son Andres of Atlanta, GA; daughter Cecilia and son-in-law Craig Clark. A resident of Albuquerque since 1996, formerly of El Paso, TX., he was born Oct. 7,1919 in Philadelphia, PA. and passed away on February 26, 2002. He was an avid golfer, tennis player, and runner. After retirement, he served his community and his most loved activity was playing Santa Claus to the children of El Paso. He was an officer with Gunning Casteel Drug Stores where he franchised cosmetics and was a fine goods buyer. At the time of his retirement he was a Director of Santa Teresa Travel Agency. He also served twelve years as Recorder and Executive Secretary of El Maida Shrine Temple. He was a 50-year member of Fraternity Masonic Lodge #1111 and a member of the El Paso Scottish Rite Bodies. He was Past Potentate of El Maida Shrine Temple and past Director of the Royal Order of Jesters Court #34. He was the Ritualistic Director of El Maida Shrine. 1968 Member of the Board for the Shrine Burns Institute Hospital Houston Unit. Former Director of Public Relations and Advertising for El Maida Shrine Temple. Past Circus Chairman of El Maida Shrine Circus. Past member of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Board of the Rodeo and Livestock Committee. He was a former member of the Alta Vista Optimist Club. He served his country proudly in the Army Medical Corps and was with the Armed Forces in World War II stationed in the South Pacific Ocean area. He was a member of Coronado Christian Church. DeWITT, JAMES (JIM) LEWIS 80, passed away March 3, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. DeWitt was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on September 18, 1921 and moved to Meridian, Mississippi during his youth before entering the U.S. Army in 1942. Mr. DeWitt retired from the U.S. Army with over 20 years of service as a Sergeant First Class (P) and 10 years of Federal service as a Department of Defense civilian at Ft. Bliss, Texas. During Mr. DeWitt's tenure with the U.S. Military, Mr. DeWitt served in World War II and the Korean conflict and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, World War II Occupational Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal W/7 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal 4th Award, and the National Defense Service Medal. After his retirement from the Government, Mr. DeWitt was employed by the Western Technical Institute of El Paso, Texas where he retired in 1991 as an automotive technical instructor. Mr. DeWitt was a longtime resident of El Paso, Texas before he retired and then moved to Sheridan, Arkansas in 1994. Mr. DeWitt accepted Christ in January 1959 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Mr. DeWitt is preceded in death by his father and mother, lewis and Norma DeWitt and brother and sister, Clyde and Lucille DeWitt of Meridian, Mississippi. Mr. DeWitt is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy DeWitt of Sheridan, Arkansas, his son, George and daughter‑in‑law Rachel DeWitt, of El Paso, Texas, his daughter, Cyndi DeWitt of Hensley, Arkansas, 3 Grandchildren, Nicole and Chad Stewart of Hensley, Arkansas and Cory James DeWitt of El Paso, Texas and many relatives in the surrounding communities of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Meridian, Mississippi. Mr. DeWitt will always be remembered as a loving and caring Husband, Father and Papaw. Jim will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who all know, that Jim has passed on to a much better place where his is free of pain, where he can now enjoy the things he loved to do. GABLE, BILL EUGENE Loving father and devoted grandfather, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 3, 2002. His life was dedicated to serving our Savior Jesus Christ, his family, and his country. Mr. Gable was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and had been a resident of El Paso since 1962. He served in the military, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was a member of the Church of God, 2400 Federal Ave., faithfully attending and serving there, and the Church of Christ, 3130 McKinley, the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship, and regularly attended theRanchman's Christian Cowboy Camp Meetings. He was a resident of El Paso since 1964 after he retired from Walker AFB in Roswell, New Mexico.
