SCHUT, JACOB M.D., passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2002. Dr. Schut was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and graduated from Universidad de Buenos Aires. As a psychiatrist, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson University and Texas Tech University. He also worked at the Department of Veterans' Affairs and was CEO of Sun Valley Regional Hospital. Dr. Schut was a member of Rotary International and on the boards of American Heart Association, El Paso Opera Company, El Paso Pro Musica, El Paso County Medical Society, Visiting Nurses Association, American Diabetes Association and West Texas Council on Alcoholism. EWALD, JOHN MELDON of San Antonio died March 8, 2002, at Chandler Medical Center in San Antonio of complications of cancer. He was 71. He was born Oct. 27, 1930, to Edward and Exa Ewald of El Paso. He graduated from Austin High School in El Paso and attended Texas Western College, which later became the University of Texas at El Paso. He married Joyce Ellen Dyal on July 1, 1950. They had two children and celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary last year. After he retired, he and Joyce enjoyed six years at Filolita, their rural property near Mimbres, N.M. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Terry and her husband Steve Petto; and son Mel and his wife Susan, all of San Antonio; two grandchildren; and one great‑grandchild. KALMAN, LAZARUS LEON a resident of El Paso since 1976‑was born in New York City on December 13, 1914 and passed away on March 9, 2002 in El Paso at age 87. Dr. Kalman was a retired New York City fireman who graduated from City College in New York in 1935 and from the New York College of Chiropractic in 1958. Captain Kalman was a decorated veteran of both World War II and the Korean War; he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross three times and the Air Medal four times. His professional career was spent as a registered physical therapist and chiropractor. Dr. Kalman was an active member of the community and is the past post surgeon of the Jewish War Veterans. Leon‑as he was known by his family and friends‑is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Anita Moss. He is also survived by sons Dr. Leslie Kalman of Glendale, California and Russell Kalman, daughter‑in‑law Katherine Kalman and granddaughter Zoc Kalman of El Paso. Upon Graduation, he joined the United States Navy, where he won the All Naval Fleet as well as the All Service Wrestling Championships in the mid 1930's aboard the U.S.S. Nevada. During World War II, he served aboard the U.S.S. Leon and participated in several Pacific invasions as a Beach Master. Later, he worked as a corporate secretary for Fireman's Fund Insurance. An avid golfer throughout the years, he was a member o f Ascarate Senior's Golf Group in El Paso. He always had kind words and a warm heart. He will be dearly missed by all. HEATH, JOE DIBRELL M.D., died March 4, 2002 in an El Paso, Texas hospital due to respiratory failure. Dr. Joe Heath was born May 16, 1917 in Hondo, Texas. Dr. Heath graduated Valedictorian from Sinton High School in 1934. He graduated from UT Austin in 1942 and received his M.D. degree from Southwestern Medical College in 1945. He served his internship in Denver, Colorado and his residency in San Angelo, Texas. Dr. Heath served in the US Army from 1943 through 1948. In 1949, he opened his General Medical practice in Kermit, Texas where he served the community for the next forty years. Apart from his medical practice, Dr. Heath was very active in civic and other organizations. He was a member of the Kermit School Board from 1964 until 1969. He was active in the Masonic Lodge, York Rite and Scottish Rite Masons, as well as the Texas Medical Association and the Reeves, Ward and Winkler County Medical Society. From 1967 until 1971, the State Department employed Dr. Heath as a Volunteer Physician in Vietnam. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Southwestern Medical College and the University of Texas in 1968. After his retirement in 1989, Dr. Heath continued to be of service to his community by tutoring the students at West Texas Children's Home in Pyote, Texas. Dr. Joe Heath was preceded in death by his sister Billie Crow and his loving wife, Frances Roberts Heath, whom he married October 9, 1943. Dr. Heath is survived by his sons, Robert L.
