CAMPBELL, MADELYN RUTH HOOPER On March 13, 2002, Madelyn Ruth Hooper Campbell passed from this earth to a better place. Madelyn was born on January 25, 1918. She was the daughter of Kathleen Reed Walker and James Fullerton Hooper, III of Selma, Alabama. She grew up in Selma and then went to the University of Alabama where she was received a degree in Speech Pathology in 1940. During her university days, she was active in her sorority, Phi Mu, as well as the Thespian Society. Instead of proceeding on an acting or professional career, she moved to Texas with her husband, Luther Lee Campbell. Luther became a dentist, and they lived most of their married life of over 50 years in Portland, Texas. Madelyn raised four children, Leila Gary Cosby, Luther Lee Campbell, Jr., Douglas Ligon Campbell, and Kathleen Gary Campbell Walker. In addition, she helped run the dental office as well as the household. All of her children attended college. After her husband's death in February of 1997, she moved to El Paso in 1998. Leila became a teacher; Luther, an accountant; Doug, a sales representative and dock supervisor; and Kathleen, a lawyer. She often volunteered her time as a hospital aide. Madelyn was a true steel magnolia. She dealt with life's challenges directly and calmly with few accolades. She was a gracious lady and compassionate person. She always gave of herself to others, and was never one to utter harsh words or complain. To know her was to respect her intellect and internal strength. She was blessed with a sharp wit and a vast amount of knowledge and insight based on years of steady reading. She was a devoted student of the bible and a Presbyterian. Her life was a gift to all who knew her. In the end, she suffered from Alzheimer's. To see such an intellect eroded by this terrible affliction was heartbreaking, but she maintained till the end with dignity and grace as she did throughout her life. Her will to live was strongly evident in her final days. Her family and friends will all miss the light her life brought to them. All of her children survive her, as well as five grandchildren and three great‑grandchildren.
