Cecil C. 86, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2002, a resident of El Paso for 41 years. Rev. Kelley retired as a SFC from the U.S. Army, serving in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He had been a Chief Pharmacist's Mate in the U.S. Navy in WWII and was employed postwar in that capacity by a major oil company in the Caribbean area. Later he became a Senior Health Officer for the U.S. Customs Service with assignments at Laredo, El Paso and other Mexican border facilities. April 3 2001 Return to top BARRY, BROTHER LLOYD ANTHONY S.J. died early Easter morning, Sunday, March 31, 2002 of heart failure at the Jesuit retirement home, Ignatius Residence in New Orleans, LA. Age 88 years, a native of Alexandria, LA, son of the late Lyda Richard Barry and Wilfred Bennet Barry. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University in 1941 and entered the Jesuits on December 25, 1941. Well known by people across the South as a man for all seasons and a jack of all trades, Brother Barry served as a minister and maintenance supervisor in many Jesuit Schools and houses. He spent his earliest Jesuit years in extended assignments at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL and St. Charles College, Grand Coteau, LA. In the 1960's, he supervised the famous Brothers' Maintenance Corps of the Southern Province of Jesuits. The brothers' corps traveled from Jesuit house to Jesuit house in the summer months fixing, painting, replumbing, rewiring, renovating and building. In the early 1970's he served as a missionary in Brazil. When he returned in 1973 he started his longest single assignment ever, at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas. He was minister there for 15 years. Later he moved to Sacred Heart Parish, El Paso, serving poor Mexican-Americans. In 1995 he moved to Ignatius Residence. Surviving family members include his sisters, Mrs. Hoyt Strain of Baton Rouge, LA and Mrs. J.M. Brown of Zachary, LA and a brother Donald Barry of Perryville, MO as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of a pioneer West Texas family and had spent his entire life in Hudspeth County in the farming and ranching business. He then designed, built, and owned DI-TE Hog Farm until he retired a second time in 1995 (A 500 sow farrow-to-finish commercial farm in Chaparral.) He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane, his three sons Ralph G. NIEMON, WAYNE W. 83 passed away April 2, 2002. He was born to parents, John and Martha Niemonen on Jan. 23, 1919 in Eldorado, Ill. He graduated from Zeigler Community High School, Zeigler, Illinois in 1936. He entered the military service on 26 March 1941 as a member of the 200th Coast Artillery Battalion and was sent to the Philippine Islands immediately after WWII was declared. In Apr. 1942, Wayne became A P.O.W. He was captured on Bataan. Six weeks later he was transferred to Bilibid prison - then to Cabanatuan Death Camp, working on various burial details for two years, then 13 months before liberation he was shipped to Japan's Fukuoka Camp #3 working in steel mills. After being in a Japanese P.O.W. Camp Hospital for 120 days liberation finally came. When released he was down to 88 pounds in weight. His military decorations and citations include the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Ribbon w/Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal - Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Ribbon w/Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Badge w/3 oak leaf clusters and the Victory Ribbon. Mr. Niemon was an active member of the American Ex-P.O.W.'S El Paso Chapter. After returning to civilian life he as employed by the Potash Company of America in Carlsbad, N.M. As a Motorman for an underground mine. He received the Homes Safety Award for 40 years without a lost time acident in underground mining. He retired in 1977. He married his childhood sweetheart, Marian S. Sturm in 1946 who preceded him in death after 50 years together. He was an avid traveler to various parts of the United States with his wife Marian in their R.V. He is survived by Nephews, George White, Albuquerque, N.M., William White, Carlsbad, N.M., cousin Lillian Howard, Clinton, Ind. and Kim Howard a trusted and loyal caregiver for the past 4 years.
