He was born January 12, 1922 in San Elizario, Texas, to Jose Jesus and Romanita Montes, a pioneer family of San Elizario. He was a life long resident of El Paso, and a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Montes was a T/Sgt in the United States Army during World War II, he was assigned to Company, B, 71st Infantry Regiment, 44 Div. He served in Eastern France, Germany, and Austria as a squad leader in a rifle company. He led his men in an outstanding manner with excellent leadership and sound judgment under hostile fire. His courage and devotion earned him the Bronze Star Medal, WWII Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Service Stars, and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Montes was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Jesus and Romanita Montes, brothers Manuel Montes, Francisco Montes, Conrado Montes, Antonio Montes, and one sister Aurora M. Lara. He is survived by his loving daughters Maria Teresa (Terry) Martinez, and Roberta (Bobbi) Laguna. Sons, Ruben Montes, Luis Montes and Michael Norris. Brothers Jose Jesus Montes II, Maximo Montes, Carlos Montes, and Oscar Montes. Sister, Maria Teresa Maldonado. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. ROMANS 8:18 JENSEN, GREGORY MARTIN (58), passed away April 13, 2002. Born in Los Angeles, California on March 28, 1944 to the late Orville and the Late Florance Jensen. He retired from the US Army after 23 years of service. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn, sons Shawn Jensen (El Paso), Cory Jensen (Houston) and daughter Michelle Latham and son in law Jeff Latham (Austin). Born June 9, 1912 to Mary Catherine Walters (deceased) (1963) and Frederick Homer Ruble (deceased) (1953) in Mooreland, OK. 22 years and 6 months in the United States Army serving his country during World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam receiving qualified Sharpshooter U.S. Army Rifle M. 1903, expert U.S. Army Rifle M-1, Sharpshooter U.S. Army M-45, qualified by Field Range Firing of U.S. Army Automatic Weapon Rifle Bar; U.S. Army Machine Gun .30 caliber and .50 caliber and U.S. Army Major 60 mm. Qualified first aid technician (Red Cross certified), qualified Chemical Warfare Specialist and Emergency Demolition Specialist. Upon receiving his degrees he became a Cannon 8 priest in the Episcopal Church serving The Trans Pecos Region in Van Horn and Horizon City, Texas. He then became an Associate Priest at Saint Alban's Episcopal Church in El Paso. Reverend Ruble's achievements also included Ltc. Civil Air Patrol as the Chaplain for Group 16 Texas Wing. He also was a 66 year, 32nd Degree Mason and Scottish Rite Shriner of Mooreland, OK and El Paso Scottish Rite Bodies and El Maida Temple. Other noted Fraternal Organizations were Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veteran, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of The Moose and Lions Club. WYNN, ADOLPHUS OFERAL JR. of Chandler, Ariz. passed away April 15, 2002, in Chandler. He was born May 2, 1914, in El Paso, Texas to Adolphus Wynn and Virginia Hassel Evans Wynn. He married Helen Wilke Feb. 1, 1941. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Carol Wynn Early of Tempe, Ariz. A.O. Wynn began his 37-year career with the El Paso Public Schools in 1938. A graduate of Texas College of Mines with a Master of Arts in Education, Wynn's lifelong service spanned several positions - from classroom teacher to counselor, principal, supervisor and Director of Records. In 1975, Mr. Wynn retired as the Assistant Superintendent for Special Services and Employee Benefits. An active member and several times officer of the Lions Club, Mr. Wynn was also involved in various city and state committees including Chairman of the Task Force on Elementary and Secondary Education Goals for El Paso and the Mayor's Committee for the Handicapped under Mayor Don Henderson. He was a founder of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was an active member of the El Paso Retired Teachers Association. In 1974, he was named Outstanding Ex-Student of Austin High School. He and his wife moved to Chandler in 1998 and resided at Park Regency Village, where he served two years as vice-president and one year as president of the Resident's Council. He was a member of Dayspring United Methodist Church of Tempe. He had one sister, Fay Nelson, and one brother, George Wynn, both deceased. He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter, Carol (Mike) Early; one granddaughter, Janet (Regan) Stone of Glendale, Ariz.; one grandson, J.D. April 21 2001 Return to top BAKER, PHILLIP C. born on October 23, 1960 went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer on April 18, 2002, at the age of 41. Phillip is survived by his life partner Michael Trujillo whom he loved and with all his heart. He was the oldest and beloved son of Phillip A. and Beryl T. Baker. He is also survived by two brothers and sisters in law, 1 niece and four nephews. David K. and Monica M. COLON-CORDERO, EVANS I. 70, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2002, after a long illness. Evans was born December 28, 1931 in San German, Puerto Rico. He retired from the United States Army as an E-8 in 1974 and settled in El Paso. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Scottish Rite Temple, Fraternity Lodge 1111 and the El Maida-Shrine as a Greeter. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans. Evans is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Norma R. Colon, and his son and wife, Evans H. Colon and Marie Colon; and his two daughters and their husbands, Norma and Kevin Alford; and Rebecca and Adrian Gallegos. He is also survived by grandchildren who love him dearly, Angelina Williamson and her husband, Garrett Williamson, Patricia Gallegos, A.J. He is survived by his wife Mae B. Crawford, a son, D. Bruce Crawford, his wife Susan, his daughter Jane Anderson of Austin, Texas, a granddaughter Sabrina, a brother Frank J. Graveside services were held the 17th at Ligonier Valley Cemetery in PA. ORTIZ, PEGGIE BUCHANAN was born in Waxahachie, Texas, February 12, 1922. After attending various girls schools in Washington D.C.; Dallas, Texas, California and Arizona; she graduated from Radford School for Girls. She then entered Texas College of Mining and Metallurgy, where she first met her future husband, Arthur Ortiz, Jr. Separated during WWII, she worked in various banks. After the war, she worked for a time at Music Corporation of America in Chicago. She eventually moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. There she married Harold Jones, who predeceased her in 1982. Returning to El Paso, she again met and subsequently married Arthur Ortiz. She is survived by her husband and by her nephew, Robert and his wife, Ruth Buchanan of Naperville, Illinois and her step-son, Robert and his wife Sandy Jones of Portland, Oregon. A Memorial Service will be held at the family residence, located at 841 Gomez Rd. on Sunday, April 21, 2002 at 2 p.m., it will be conducted by Reverend Dr. James Jauncey, who officiated at their wedding December 15, 1984, at the same location. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home - West. Simpson, Judy (Betty June) (maiden name) Adamson, born June 7, 1924 in London Ontario, Canada. Married Paul E. Simpson in June 1945. A longtime resident of El Paso and a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, she was an avid Bible Student and member of Church Women United. She died of cancer on April 16 2002, leaving her husband, two daughters, Gail and Martha and a brother, Ray Adamson. A Memorial Service, as part of regular worship at Trinity Presbyterian Church will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. Any donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Strong, Benjamin True was born December 20, 1918 in Carmi, Illinois to Mary Dougherty and True Strong. He was reared and educated in Nocona, Texas graduating from high school in 1935. True attended Arlington State College and the University of Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1948 with a BS degree in civil engineering. He worked four years for the Texas State Highway Department, surveying state highways in the Ft. Davis region. Mr. Strong joined the US Army Corps of Engineers, graduated from the Officer Candidate School at Ft. Belvoir, then served in the Philippines and Japan in World War II. From 1946 to 1961, he owned and operated Strong Construction and Engineering in Pecos and Monahans. He moved to El Paso in 1961 and shortly thereafter began working as a Civil Engineer in the Facilities Engineering Directorate at Ft. Bliss until retiring in 1980. Subsequently he worked as a consultant on the Sun Bowl expansion project and the R.E. Thomason General Hospital renovations. True was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a Licensed State Land Surveyor and a Registered Professional Engineer. He had many interests including flying, electronics and any type of building and creating. Mr. Strong moved to Midland in the fall of 2001. He died April 19, 2002 in Midland in a local hospital. True was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Elsie Carr Strong of El Paso and his parents. He is survived by his son, Carr True Strong of Houston; his brother, Ralph Strong of Evansville, Indiana; and his fiancee, Joyce Fields of Midland. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, April 22, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at Midland Bible Church with Reverend Vince Loftis officiating.
