Frank Washington Underwood, 65 of 701 North Fifth street, a former Rice university football star, died in an Athens hospital Wednesday night, DEc. 8 1971. His death was sudden. Funeral services were held at 10:30 am Saaturday at the Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dale Swain, Methodist minister and the Rev. Arthur Osborne, Presbyterian minister, officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Mr. Underwood was born Aug.23, 1906 at Honey Grove, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Underwood. He graduated from Honey Grove high school where he was an outstanding athlete. He later enrolled at Rice and was named to the all conference team while playing there. He was later named to the Rice hall of Fame. He married Miss Mary Virginia Street, May 21, 1930 in Houston. Survivors are his wife, one son, Johnny Underwood of Athens; tow daughters. Mrs. Emiy Fernandes of Pecos and Mrs. Martha Blevins of Fort Worth and four grandchildren. He was amember of the McKenzie United Methodist church, Lodge 154, Af&Am, the Honey Grove fire department and the Chamber of Commerce. He was an insurance agent at the time of his death. He was in the grocery business many years.
