A. Rowland Died Feb 22, 1896, aged 104 years". She is buried near Taylor and Eliza Rowland near a hedgerow on the left as you enter the cemetery. The stone is a tall grey and white marble. The inscription is deep, but hard to read on the patterned stone. Additional Comments: The date of birth of 1792 is calculated by using the inscription on her tombstone and the age listed in her obituary in the Ladonia paper. This date could vary between 1792 and 1811 if based on census data. It seems she was at least considered an adult by June 4, 1827 when she is mentioned in a deed with her mother and sisters. I believe she was the older age, Taylor was still alive and would have overseen the inscription on her headstone. She may not have admitted her true age until she was well past marriageable age, even in widowhood. In 1850 she and Hiram were listed as unable to read or write, this may have been a factor. Her true age may always be a mystery. I also found some proof of my theory that Barbery is the daughter of the Elizabeth Panther living next to Hiram and Barbery in 1850. I found it in land records. In "Land Deed Genealogy of Lincoln Co. Tn 1828 - 1834 Vol 3" compiled by Helen and Timothy Marsh: Deed Book "H" page 221- 4th June 1827- "Deed from Elizabeth Painter, Rachel Painter, Mary Painter alias Mary Jeans, Hardy Jeans the said Mary's husband, and Barbary Painter all of Lincoln County, Tennessee to James P. Baxter of same place for 9 acres and 1 acre of land in Lincoln County and on the waters of the east fork of Mulberry Creek a north branch of Elk River, containing 9 acres, the other including a cabin wherein William Spradling formerly lived adn wherein Isaac Curry now lives, containing 1 acre, in the whole 10 acres. Wit: George W. Stramblen and John Cooper. Reg: 9th February 1829." This would indicate Barbary and Hiram were not married on June 4, 1827 when the deed was written. Their first child, Jessie M. Roland was born in 1828 so I would think that they married in late 1827 or early 1828. I believe Barbara's father was Samuel Painter from NC. He is the only Painter/Panter/Panther/Bender that I can find in Lincoln Co TN during the time period. No definite proof so far. 1860 Census Lincoln Co, TN: M 653, Roll 1261 Pg 7 (the sheet image has page 16 written on it) Lincoln Co, TX Civil Dist #1 Household #103/102 Barberry Rolin 49 born NC washer woman Samuel 17 born TN farming Catherine 22 born TN spinning Harriet 13 born TN Taylor 9 born TN William 6 born TN 1870 Census Shelbyville, Dist 23, Bedford Co, Tn: Barbary and her two youngest sons, Taylor and William are living with son, George, who is listed as George Rolling on the 1870 Bedford Co, TN Census. 1880 Giles Co, TN census: Barbara (71) is living with son, Taylor and his family on the 1880 Giles Co,TN Census. Feb 22, 1896: "Grandma Rolland, the oldest resident in Fannin County, passed quietly away last Friday at her home near Center Point, surrounded by her many friends and sorrowing relatives. She was in the 104th year; has been a resident of Texas for the past 15 years. She was a native of Giles Co, TN (Ladonia Commercial - March 6, 1896)" This was reprinted in " OBITUARIES, SOCIALS AND OTHER SOLICITUDES, ANOTHER LOOK AT THE HARSH SIDE OF THE GOOD OL' DAYS Along the Red River at the Turn of the Century Circa 1893- 1923" Source: Diane Grant found in the Mormon Library at Salt Lake City. Burial: Her stone is inscribed "Elizabeth, Mother of T. A. Rowland Died Feb 22, 1896, aged 104 years". She is buried near Taylor and Eliza Rowland at Center Point Cemetery which was on a portion of land he donated for a cemetery. Source: Center Point Cemetery visit; writings from Minnie Ada Rowland Branch and stories she told the family. Also as a child I went to Center Point when Mawmaw (Minnie) was present as well as her sister Lena, during a "clean up day".
