James R. Ford came to Foard Co. Texas (CROWELL,TX) from Ellis county, near Waxahachie, Texas,, in 1905/06 by railroad car to Vernon, Texas. He came with several other families--The Moores (he married a Moore), Sellers, Bradfords, and others. He settled five miles east of Crowell and lived there until he retired. A faithful Baptist, he served as a Sunday School teacher, school trustee, county commissioner for three terms, and a member of the W.O.W lodge. He stayed the first night in Foard Cty with John and Mary Gamble in the Gambleville community. John tried to sell him his farm and asked $11.00 an acre: that was too much. He traveled on a few miles and bought 700 acres for $7.00 an acre. Twenty seven years later, his son, Oran, and John Gamble's granddaughter, Texas Gamble, were married. Gordon (his son) arrived in France during World War I the same day his mother died in Foard County. ( Quintina L Moore) Gordon was killed in battle a short time later, The Gordon J Ford Post was named in his honor. The soldier on the courthouse lawn in Crowell, Texas is in memory of him as well as the other boy from Foard County who died in action.
