Raney, do hereby make application for a pension pursuant to the provisions of Articles 6204 to 6227, inclusive, of the Revised Civil Statutes of 1925, as amended by H. B. No. 150, passed by the Forty-second Legislature at its Regular Session, and all other laws of this State relating thereto. I served as a Confederate soldier in the war between the States of the United States; or (that I was a soldier who under special laws of the State of Texas during said war served in organizations for the protection of the frontier against Indian raiders or Mexican marauders); or (that I was a soldier of the militia of the State of ________who was in active service during said war). I served honorably from the date of my enlistment until the close of the war (or until I was discharged or paroled in some military organization regularly mustered into the army or navy of the Confederate States until the surrender). Raney, do solemny swear that I am 85 (eighty-five) years of age; was born March 14, 1847, in the State of Tennessee, and entered the Confederate Army at Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee, June 13, 1862, at the age of 15, and served as a private in Company C, 34th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. I served as a fifer until after the surrender, and was mustered out of the service in Maryland in May 1865. I further swear that I have been a resident of Texas since December 25, 1875, and now reside in Franklin County, Texas, where I am engaged in the business of farming. Samuel M. Raney is receiving a $50.00 pension, and still living, so I am wondering, Mr. Sheppard, as Mr. Raney is drawing $50.00 and only $25.00 seems to be the limit for pensioner, is his wife, Mahala Jane Raney entitied to the $100 mortuary fee? Raney, said to have served as a Bugler with Company C, 34th regiment Tennessee Infantry. The dates of birth and death are given as 14 March 1847 and 15 March 1950. It is requested you forward a transcript of the military service of this deceased veteran on the basis of which he was awarded pension number 50859.
