Vernon Optic Herald 19 Jan 1934 After fighting a game but losing battle for several years, Norman H. Long, popular and well know citizen, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at 1:30. He had been confined to his home the past few weeks, but was feeling much better Tuesday, and insisted on visiting his sister, Mrs. C.F. Wall, who is seriously ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Hogan, one block north of the Long home. He was sitting in a chair, taking his usual cheerful interest in the conversation, when the end came. Mr. Long was 53 years of age. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon by a life long friend, Eld. J.C. Sikes of Needmore, who is a Primitive Baptist. Burial followed in the City Cemetery. Norman Hosea Long was born in Franklin County, January 25, 1881, a son of S.M. and Laura Long, and one of 14 children. He spent his entire life in and near Mt. Vernon, with the exception of a short period in early youth when he worked on a farm near Wylie. In early manhood he joined Hose Majors in opening the grocery firm of Majors & Long, which was continued until 1911 when Mr. Majors sold to W.T. Mahaffey and the firm became Long & Mahaffey. In 1918, Mr. Mahaffey sold his interest in the business to L.E. Douglas, the firm name being Long & Douglas until 1920 when they both sold out to Long, Hill & Ham, composed of Jim Long, C.R. Hill, and J.B. Ham. About a year preceding, Mr. Long and Mr. Douglas had bought the hardware business of G.P. Hill, which they have operated since 1919 under the name of Mt. Vernon Hardware Co. Mr. Long was a successful businessman who was always loyal to his home town and wiling to work for its interests. He had been president of the Chamber of Commerce, had served as a member of the City Council, and was for several years, a director in the Merchants and Planters National Bank. Mr. Long was married to Miss Maud Teague, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.N. Teague, November 14, 1915. She survives him, along with a host of relatives and friends, including the following brothers and sisters; Sam, Bob and Dan Long; Mrs. C.F. Wall and Mrs. D.S. Dawson of Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Sam Pullen of Dallas.
