Vernon Optic Herald 9 Feb 1923 S.M. Long died suddenly at his home 5 miles south of Mt. Vernon last Friday night. He and his brother, P.C. Long had just eaten supper and he had left the table and walked into the sitting room when P.C. Long heard him fall and hastened to him, finding him on the floor, but not unconscious. It was some time before a physician could get there and within the hour, Mr. Long died. Dr. Stephens pronounced apoplexy as the cause of death. The body was laid to rest in Providence Cemetery Saturday and Bro. S.R. Smith conducted the funeral services. S.M. Long was a son of the late lamented James Long, one of the pioneer settlers of this area whose life and influence left a lasting impression upon the lives of those who came in contact with him. He was born July 21, 1855, on the place where he died, being the old homestead which is so dear to the large family. He was married January 3, 1876 to Miss Laura Caudle and 14 children were born to them, only three of whom have preceded their parents to the Great Beyond- Parke, Perry and Maydell. Mrs. Long died July 24, 1917, beloved by all who knew here. Besides these 11 children and their families, Mr. Long leaves two brothers and two sisters; R.B. Long of Commerce and P.C. Long of Franklin Co., Mrs. J.J. Nance of Cleburne and Mrs. B.E. Rountree of Mt. Vernon. He serviced his county several terms as County Attorney and in many other positions of trust.
