Vernon Optic Herald 24 Jul 1931 James Long, age 38 years, eleven months and six days, passed away at his home in Mt. Vernon at 4:40 last Friday morning. His death was a shock to the entire community. Although he has been in very feeble health ever since he had a stroke of paralysis about one year ago, very few of his friends realized the seriousness of his condition. He had made a trip to Dallas, Wednesday, to consult a specialist. Jim was a son the last S.M. and Laura Long and was born in Franklin County. He spent his boyhood days in this country, coming to Mt. Vernon when a lad. He proved his efficiency and dependability as a bookkeeper and assistant cashier in the Merchants and Planters National Bank, and later became associated with the grocery firm of Long, Hill & Ham. He was one of the most popular businessmen of the community. He married Miss Lula McDonough, October 19, 1913, and was the father of three children, one daughter and two sons. Besides his wife and children, he leaves the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. D.S. Dawson, Mrs. J.M. Ham, Norman H. Long, Mrs. C.F. Wall, Sam Long, Mrs. Frankie Seay, Mrs. Mattie Pullen, Bob Long and Dan Long. In his death, the devoted wife and children have lost their loving and wise protector and counselor, his church has lost one of her most active and influential members, the business interests of the town and county, a loyal, progressive, honest man, all good people, a faithful friend. Verily, Jim Long was a prince among men, and we shall miss his cheerful greeting and warm-hearted friendship, which has endured through these years. The funeral services at the Baptist Church Saturday morning were attended by a host of mourning relatives and friends from far and near, and his pastor, A.E. Bradbury, gave a splendid address in which he paid a fitting tribute to the life and character of the deceased. Interment was in City Cemetery, directly after the service at the church.
