Vernon Optic Herald 22 Jul 1921 & 29 Jul 1921 S.M. Long received the following telegram: "Warren Perry Long was drowned at 5:52 p.m., July 19, 1921, Lake Michigan, at this station (Great Lakes Naval Training Station); lake very rough; no swimming that evening; your son and several others went in swimming, contrary to published orders that swimming hours are from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m., and lifeboat must be out before swimming is permitted. Another man nearly drowned trying to save your son. Body was recovered at 11:35 a.m., July 21. Wire shipping instructions." Perry was born in Franklin County, January 5, 1904. Funeral services were held at Providence Cemetery.
