Freestone County, Texas Bible The Bible of Benjamin Allen Philpott Background Information This Bible was donated to the Burlington Rock Island (BRI) Museum in Teague, Texas, by the family of Clair and Kitty Clark. Clair Clark was a ggrandson of Horatio V. Philpott, father of B. A. Philpott. B. A. Philpott was born 26 September 1811 in Washington County, Maryland. He died 17 November 1892 in Fairfield, Texas, and is buried in Fairfield. B. A. Philpott was the son of Horatio V. Philpott, born 25 September 1789 in Frederick County, Maryland, and Nancy Ann Allen, born 23 March 1787 in Washington Co., Maryland. Nancy Ann Allen Philpott died 20 October 1811 in Frederick County, Maryland. B. A. Philpott served as Lt. Colonel and commanding officer of Philpott’s Infantry (12th Texas Infantry) during the Civil War. He saw service in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. There is more information about the Philpott family in the “History of Freestone County”, Volume I. B. A. Philpott was married first to Margaret Scruggs, 2 May 1837 in Madison County, Alabama. She was born 1821 in Morgan County, Alabama, and died 21 April 1874 in Fairfield, Texas. He was married second to Miss Sallie Bishop, April 27, 1875 in Corsicana, Texas. ____________________________________________________ This CD contains information from the Bible and additional information taken from family papers found tucked in the family record pages. The title page for the Bible shows a publication date of 1870. (There is no indication when B. A. Philpott purchased the Bible. If he purchased it in 1870, he would have been 59 years old.) At least 3 different people made entries into the Bible, based on the handwritting. While transcribing the information from the Bible, I have tried to interpret the information as accurately as possible. Because of the age and condition of the Bible, some of the information is extremely difficult to read. Philpott Bible page 2 At any point where the information is not clear, I’ve indicated that with a question mark. Philpott family history - A handwritten note with information about the ancestors of B. A. Philpott. “The Philpott family came from Northumberland, England early in the 17th century. They landed on the shore of Virginia but soon afterwards settled on the Merry Sands (Land?) tract in Maryland not far from Harpers Ferry. The first of whom we have definite knowledge was Barton Philpott, born in Washington Co., Maryland. Benjamin, only son of Barton Philpott, was born in Washington Co., Maryland and was married to Elizabeth Hackney of Westmoreland County, Virginia about the year 1788. These were the parents of Horatio Philpott.” The following is a note about the eightieth birthday celebration of B. A. Philpott: “This 26th Sept A.D. 1891 is the eightieth natal day of Col. Benjamin Allen Philpott, born in Washington County, Maryland and son of Horatio Philpott & Ann Allen Philpott and the following is a list of the signatures of the descendents & relatives of Horatio & Anne Allen Philpott (this is scratched through) who were present upon this occasion at the residence of Col. B. A. Philpott.” Guests who attended the birthday celebration Benj. A. Philpott Mary E. Philpott N. M. Daviss Emma L. Riley H. N. Thomason Ruby Pack Riley Hugh B. Davis Callie Bessie Riley W. R. It is about Abraham - to find out all about him we will have to get his family back to Adam. It will make us read the first twelve chapters in the Bible. It will take time but that is what time is made for. Won’t you read it please?” side 2. “A bright new year and a sunny track along an upward way and a song of praise on looking back When the year has passed away and golden sheaves, not small nor few. This is my new years wish for you.” A letter and envelop found in the Bible written by Aunt Sallie Philpott to Maymie (Compton) Sadler, a ggranddaughter of Horatio V. Philpott and his second wife Harriet Paxton Philpott: Home Dec 29th 27 My Dear Maymie and Faith, I must be growing old but am only 88 but I forget names and sometimes dates too. But still remember some. Never forget those I loved in the long ago. But times, places, and seasons pass and still I remember. I hope to be in Teague next Sunday. I have given up my class of “old ladies” and almost for the first time have no S. S. work. Eighty five years in that work have made some changes - not all improvements either. Where is your older daughter. I want to go see her when she settles somewhere but weather has kept me at home nearly all the winter. I hope to see you occasionally.
