Freestone County, Texas Biographies Elisha Anglin (1 Jan 1798 – 17 Jan 1874) Elisha Anglin is one of the most important early pioneers in what was to become Texas. Elisha Anglin is the progenitor to the important Anglin family. Elisha has a huge impact with his actions and also of his childrens. Elisha Anglin was born Powell Valley, Lee County, Virginia. Over the course of his long life, he married five women: Rachel Wilson (m 1816 in Lee Co., VA; d 1830 in Edgar Co., IL), Catherine Duty (b 1806 Laurens Co., SC; m 21 July 1831 in Coles Co., IL; d 1837 in Fort Houston, Anderson Co., TX), Orpha Bates (b 18 April 1809 in Hamilton Co., OH; m abt Mar 1837 Robertson Co., TX; d 1860 in old Springfield, Limestone Co., TX), Nancy Douthit (b 26 Oct 1794 TN; m abt 1860 TX; d 1869 near Elkhart, TX), and finally Sarah Lavonia Crist (b 25 May 1837 in TX; m 13 Sep 1873 in Limestone Co., TX; and d 7 Dec 1912 in Limestone Co., TX). Over the course of his life he had 17 children: 5 children with Rachel, 3 with Catherine, and 9 with Orpha. Elisha Anglin came to Texas with Parkers from Illinois in 1833, reached Grimes Prarie, Grimes Co. in fall of 1833 where Austin Company still remained. Elisha was given a land claim in Limestone Co. 1834. As such Elisha Anglin was one of the first white men who settled in Limestone County. Elisha Anglin is listed in 1834 as former United States citizens that became citizens of Fort Tenoxtitlan, [now Burleson Co., TX] at the age of 37 with his wife Catherine (age 21) and 6 children. Elisha loses his eldest daughter at Ft. Parker massacre of Mar 1836. Elisha Anglin and three of his sons were recognized on the 1844 Tax List for Robertson County, Texas as fighting for Texas Independence in 1836-37. On January 11, 1845, Elisha appears in the Texas National Register recruiting people to live in old Springfield, Limestone Co., TX. Elisha appears in Precinct 4 in the 1850 Limestone Co., TX census as a 52 year old farmer with his wife Orpha that is listed as 41 with both being illiterate. The 1850 Agricultural Census shows Elisha with 36 improved acres and 3000 unimproved acres. The 1850 Slave Schedule denotes Elisha has two older female slaves (age 50 and 70).
