DIES, MARTIN - A United States Representative from Texas; born in Jackson Parish, Louisana, on March 13, 1870; moved with his parents to Freestone County, Texas, in 1876; attended the common schools and was graduated from the law department of the University of Texas at Austin; was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced practice in Woodville, Texas; edited a newspaper in Freestone County; was county marshal; county judge of Tyler County in 1894; district attorney of the first judicial district of Texas 1898-1900; moved to Colorado, Texas, and engaged in the practice of law; moved to Beaumont, Texas, in 1902 and was employed as counsel for the Gulf Refining Co.; elected as a Democrat to the 61st and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1909-March 3, 1919); chairman, Committee on Railways and Canals (63rd and 64th Congresses); was not a candidate for reelection in 1918; retired to his ranch on Turkey Creek, Tyler County, Texas; later moved to Kerrville, Texas, in 1921 and died there July 13, 1922; was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Houston, Texas.
