Driver, M.D. - Noteworthy not only for his keen intelligence and sterling integrity, but also for his professional ability and skill, Jesse S. Driver, M.D., is meeting with signal success as a medical practitioner in the village of Coolidge, where he is rapidly building up an extensive and lucrative patronage. A son of the late William Driver, he was born December 10, 1867, in Freestone county, Texas, near the present site of Teague. Julius Driver, the doctor's grandfather, was born in South Carolina, but when a young man settled in Georgia. He came to Texas first in a prospecting trip, and being pleased with the country brought his family to this state in 1839, and located near Fairfield, Freestone county, where he resided until his death. He married in Georgia, and seven children were born of the union, as follows: Washington, who was killed in the Confederate service; Mrs. Agnes Sheffield, of Teague; Richard, of Luna, Texas; Mrs. Sarah Tatum, deceased; and Allen, William, and Mrs. Mary Henderson, deceased. Born in Georgia, William Driver was brought as a child to Texas, and grew to manhood on the home farm in Freestone county, where he spent the remainder of his comparatively brief life. He married Mary Groover, whose parents, William and Mary Groover, were born in Georgia, but spent the later years of their lives in Freestone county, Texas, their home having been near Cotton Gin. They reared six children, as follows: Lee Groover, who lost his life while in the Confederate army; Mrs. Nancy Milton, of Florida; Frank, of Teague; Mrs. Sarah Driver, deceased; John, of Mexia; and Mrs. Mattie Ramsey, of Navarro county. To Mr. and Mrs. William Driver, six children were born, namely: Julius and Victoria, twins; George, deceased; W. Frank, who resides in Benjamin, Knox county, Texas; Lee G., living near Pecos City, Texas; and Jesse S., the special subject of this sketch. His mother dying when he was but nine months old, and his father a short time later, Jesse S. Driver was brought up in the family of his uncle, Frank Groover. He received his elementary education in the schools of Mexia, and subsequently began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. E. Headlee, at Teague. Entering then the Medical College at Memphis, Tennessee, he was there graduated with the class of 1891, after which he was engaged in the practice of his profession at Teague for five years. Coming then to Limestone county, Dr. Driver located first in Callina, where he remained eight years, and then came to Coolidge, which has since been his home. Here the doctor has gained a large and successful practice, his natural talents and industry placing him among the able and skillful physicians of this section of the state. Dr. Driver married, October 22, 1893, Ella V. Carley, who was born in Teague, Texas, January 7, 1878, a daughter of Wesley and Bena (Headlee) Carley. Dr. and Mrs. Driver have four children, namely: Leslie L., born November 8, 1894; Nannie, born November 5, 1898; Willie J., who was born September 15, 1905, and died August 2, 1906; and Julius Howard, born October 18, 1907. The doctor is a member of the Limestone County Medical Association. Fraternally he belongs to the the Knights of Pythias, to the Knights of the Maccabees, and to the Praetorians. Politically he is a sound Democrat, and religiously he and his wife are consistent members of the Christian church.
