Freestone County, Texas Biographies Redin Gainer [a.k.a. Redden Gainer] Redin Gainer never lived in Freestone County, Texas that we are aware of. Redin Gainer has a famous land patent of a league of land in Freestone County, Texas that was sold to David Hall Love that is what later became Fairfield. The validity of this sale was contested in the 1878 William Gainer et al vs William Cotton et al. Apparently Redin swapped half of the league of land in Freestone County for a lot and shop in San Augustine on November 27, 1837 but this contract paper was contested as a forgery in that 1878 case. Redin Gainer was born about 1809 in Alabama, then marries Permelia Taylor in 1832. Redin Gainer and family were issued a certificate of entrance to Texas at Nacogdoches on May 16, 1835. Redin appears in the census of San Augustine district taken in the later part of 1835 with his family working as a "mechanic". Later Redin moves to Jackson Co., Texas. Redin serves in the Republic of Texas army in 1836 in Captain B. S. Read's Company, commanded by Col. Charles L. Harrison and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto for which he received bounty warrant 9307. He then served as a volunteer for the Texas Militia in 1838. His wife, Permelia died December 18, 1842 at the town of San Augustine in San Augustine county, Texas. In 1849, Redin left for the California gold rush. He is estimated to have died in 1849 to 1855.
