HIGH, a successful farmer of Ellis county, was born in North Alabama, January 17, 1821, a son of Robert A. and Mary (Lyle) High, natives of North Carolina. The father served in the Legislature of Alabama three terms, was a merchant and farmer by occupation, and died in 1840, at the age of forty years. He married Miss Mary Lyle, a daughter of Samuel Lyle, a farmer of North Carolina. She died in Alabama, and all but one of their children died in infancy: Henry A., our subject; Alabama V. B., was a half-sister to Henry, and died in Alabama, leaving a small family. Major Henry A. High was reared to farm life, and received his education in the common schools. He remained with his parents until reaching manhood, after which he engaged in farming on his own account. A few years later he engaged in the grocery business, but in 1852 he came to Texas, locating first in Freestone county, where he bought and improved a farm. After the war he sold out and came to Ellis county, and bought the 900 acres where he now lives, 300 acres of which are under a fine state of cultivation. He has since sold a part of his land, but still owns 618 acres, where he raises mostly cotton and corn, and also some stock. Mr. High served in the militia a part of the time in the late war. While with the militia he was engaged in hunting deserters, and returning them to their commands. He was in the siege of Vicksburg and was slightly wounded, and was taken prisoner at Fort Doneloon. Robert A. High received a wound in the siege of Vicksburg. Mr. High was married, in 1838, to Miss Elizabeth Mosley, a daughter of William and Temperance Mosley, natives of Virginia. The parents both died in Alabama, the father about 1830, and the mother in 1864. Mr. and Mrs. High have had eleven children, namely: Robert A., born December 5, 1840, is a farmer of Navarro county; William M., born in February, 1843, in North Alabama; Mary A., in January, 1845; Mary Compton died about 1871, leaving two daughters; Sallie, born December 9, 1850, married W. D. Sims, and died April 30, 1873, leaving one chlild; Drury V., born July 6, 1853, is engaged in the implement business at Vernon, Wilbarger county; Betty, born April 4, 1856, married W. D. Sims, and died April 17, 1879, leaving two children; Albert and Edward, born March 15, 1859; the former is clerking at El Paso, Texas, and the latter died September 8, 1864; Fanny, born August 12, 1863, married William Sims, and has one son; Gregg, born May 30, 1866, in Childress county. Mr. High has served as road overseer and school trustee, is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the family are members of the Methodist Church.
