Benjamin and his family had moved to Freestone County, Texas before the 1880 census. Marriage 1: Ben married Mary Elizabeth (Gunter) Spencer on 20 Sep 1869 in Nacogdoches Co., Texas. Mary was born in October 1853 in Texas, died 13 Oct 1903 at Young community in Freestone County. Ben and Mary had at least five children: George W.; Mary, born 1874; Martin, born September 1876; Perry, born 1878; and Buena Vista, born in March 1885. Spencer, aged 81, County and one of few Confederate Veterans left, died at his home in Teague Saturday [5 Jun 1926] after a two weeks illness. Burial was at Young Sunday afternoon. A large number of citizens of Fairfield, Teague and other points being present. Rev. E. Homer Tirey of Teague conducted services. Decease is survived by his wife and one daughter, [Buena Vista (Spencer) Miles] Mrs. E[dgar] G[addis] Miles of Fairfield. Mr. Spencer was of the old school. Honorable in all his dealings with his fellow man and highly respected by all who knew him.
